Overview

Yellow leaf disease (YLD) is a serious disease of arecanut caused by a phytoplasma — a bacteria-like organism without a cell wall, living in the plant's phloem tissue — and spread by an insect vector. It is endemic mainly in parts of Kerala and the coastal and Malnad tracts of Karnataka, where it has been present for decades and remains a major constraint on the crop.

The disease causes a gradual, progressive yellowing that starts with the older fronds and spreads, along with thinning of the crown, reduced nut size, falling yield over several years, and eventually stunted growth. Unlike many crop diseases, there is no known chemical cure once a palm is infected — management is entirely about prevention and containment, not treatment.
