Overview

Pumpkin, or kaddu (Cucurbita moschata and C. maxima), is a warm-season vine of the cucurbit family grown for its large, hard-rinded, orange-fleshed fruit, eaten as a vegetable and used for sweets, soups and seed. It is a sprawling crop — the vine is usually left on the ground rather than trained onto a bower, so it takes far more space per plant than bottle gourd or bitter gourd.

It is grown across India, with West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat among the leading states, mostly as a summer crop sown February–March or a rainy-season crop sown June–July. The plant carries separate male and female flowers that open for a single morning, so good bee activity (or hand-pollination) at flowering is what actually decides how many of the many flowers turn into fruit.

Two decisions set pumpkin apart from its cucurbit relatives: making sure flowers are pollinated in the short window they are open, and harvesting only when the fruit is fully mature — a hard rind, a long stem left on, and a week of curing in the sun. Done right, this is one of the few vegetables here that keeps in ordinary storage for months rather than days.

Climate requirements

Because the vine sprawls on open ground rather than climbing a bower, it is more exposed to soil-borne rot and to direct sun on the fruit than a trellised gourd — a light straw mulch under developing fruit helps with both.

  • Ideal temperature

    A warm-season crop that grows best at 24–30°C. It has no frost tolerance and germination is poor below about 18°C. Very high heat during flowering (above about 38°C) dries out pollen and worsens poor fruit set on top of the pollination problem the crop already has.

  • Rainfall

    Grown as a summer crop under irrigation or as a rainy-season crop on residual monsoon moisture. It tolerates short dry spells better than most cucurbits once established, but flowering and fruit fill need steady moisture; a long dry spell now gives small, poorly filled fruit.

  • Humidity

    Moderate humidity suits vine growth, but prolonged leaf wetness in the rainy-season crop favours downy and powdery mildew and can rot fruit lying directly on wet soil.

  • Sunlight

    Full sun is needed for vigorous vine growth, flowering and fruit colour; shaded vines flower poorly.

Soil requirements

Because plants are spaced 2–3 m apart and the pit — not the whole bed — carries most of the manure, under-filling the pits is the most common soil mistake: a vine planted into a poorly manured pit stays weak for its entire spread.

  • Suitable soil

    A deep, well-drained, fertile sandy loam rich in organic matter suits pumpkin best. Because the vine is left on the ground and spreads several metres, land preparation is about the planting pit more than the whole field: a generous mix of well-rotted farmyard manure worked into each pit gives the vine the reserve it needs for its long sprawling growth.

  • pH range

    Best at pH 6.0–7.5. It tolerates a slightly wider pH range than more sensitive cucurbits, but very acidic or very alkaline soil weakens the vine and cuts yield.

  • Drainage

    Good drainage matters even though the crop tolerates dry spells — waterlogging around the root zone in the rainy-season crop quickly causes collar rot and vine wilt.

  • Organic matter

    A heavy feeder for a vine crop: well-rotted FYM or compost dug into each planting pit, not just broadcast over the field, gives the strongest early growth and the best fruit size.

    Wide-spaced pits, not close beds

    Dig planting pits 2.5–3 m apart between rows and 1–1.5 m in the row (far wider than bottle or bitter gourd), since the vine sprawls on the ground rather than climbing.

    Manure each pit generously

    Mix 8–10 kg of well-rotted FYM or compost, plus the phosphorus and potash dose, into each pit — the pit is what feeds the vine for its whole spread, not the field between pits.

Pumpkin F1 Hybrid (private companies, e.g. "Amol")

Several private seed companies sell F1 pumpkin hybrids for earliness and fruit uniformity — one widely traded example is sold as "Amol", giving flat-round, mottled-green-skinned, deep-orange-fleshed fruit of about 2.5 kg. Hybrid seed costs much more than open-pollinated seed and has no public trial data, so treat trader claims as a starting point, not a guarantee.

Water-saving tips

  • A straw or dry-leaf mulch under the sprawling vine conserves moisture, keeps fruit off wet soil, and cuts weeding.
  • Because the crop is often intercropped or grown on residual monsoon moisture, many rainy-season plantings need little to no supplementary irrigation at all.
  • Ease off water in the last two to three weeks before harvest — this concentrates sugar and helps the rind harden for storage.

  • One or two hand-weedings in the first month, before the sprawling vine covers the ground and shades out most weeds itself.
  • A straw mulch under and around young vines suppresses weeds and later keeps developing fruit off bare, wet soil.

Chemical control

  • A pre-emergence herbicide cleared for cucurbits applied right after sowing, followed by one or two hand-weedings, is the practice on larger plots.

Why did so few of my pumpkin flowers turn into fruit?

Cover seedlings with a net or basket until 4–5 true leaves have formed, and hand-collect the beetles in the cool early morning when they are sluggish.

Does pumpkin have an MSP or a mandi price?

There is no MSP for pumpkin. It is traded on Agmarknet as "Pumpkin", with regular records especially from Tamil Nadu's Uzhavar Sandhai markets and other vegetable mandis across the country. Prices vary widely by season and region.
