Overview

Purple nutsedge or motha (Cyperus rotundus) is often called the world’s worst weed. It is a perennial sedge — not a true grass — recognised by its triangular (three-sided) solid stem, shiny dark-green grass-like leaves in threes, and a purplish-brown seed head. Its real strength is underground: it forms a network of wiry rhizomes strung with small underground tubers ("nuts"), joined in chains, plus basal bulbs, and it is mainly these tubers that let it spread, survive and regrow.

This tuber system is why it is so hard to control: hoeing and ploughing chop the chains and scatter the tubers, each of which can sprout a new plant, so ordinary cultivation multiplies it rather than killing it, and the tubers survive drought and stay dormant in the soil. It competes strongly for nitrogen, water and space in almost every crop — rice, sugarcane, onion, maize, vegetables and orchards. Durable control needs a persistent, integrated attack on the tuber bank: repeated cultivation to exhaust the tubers, competitive crops, mulch, and systemic herbicides that move into the tubers.

How to identify it

  • A perennial sedge with a triangular (three-sided) solid stem — roll the stem between your fingers to feel the three edges.
  • Shiny dark-green, grass-like leaves arranged in threes, and a purplish-brown seed head.
  • Underground: wiry rhizomes strung with small tubers ("nuts") in chains, plus basal bulbs.
  • Grows in patches in almost every crop and expands where cultivation scatters the tubers.

  • Competes strongly for nitrogen, water and space in rice, sugarcane, onion, maize, vegetables and orchards.

Cultural & preventive control

  • Repeatedly cultivate in the hot, dry season to bring tubers to the surface and let the sun desiccate and exhaust them.
  • Collect and remove the tubers after cultivation rather than leaving fragments to sprout.
  • Grow dense, competitive, well-fertilised crops and use mulch to suppress the sprouting shoots.
  • Prevent spread — do not move tuber-infested soil, and clean tools/machinery between fields.

Herbicide control

  • Because contact sprays only burn the top, use systemic herbicides that move into the tubers (e.g. halosulfuron in recommended crops, or glyphosate on actively growing plants in non-crop/directed situations).
  • Treat when the sedge is actively growing so the herbicide translocates to the tubers; repeat treatments are usually needed.
  • Use recommended pre- and post-emergence herbicides within a crop where registered, at the correct stage.
  • Confirm the current herbicide and safe use for your crop with your local KVK.

Integrated management

  • Attack the tuber bank persistently — combine repeated dry-season cultivation and tuber removal with systemic herbicides and competitive crops.
  • Keep it up over more than one season, since the tubers stay dormant and regrow.
  • Never rely on a single hoeing/ploughing — that scatters tubers and spreads it further.
