Every type starts the same way — a dust-fine seed sown on a raised nursery bed, grown for six or seven weeks, hardened, and transplanted as a pencil-thick seedling into a well-prepared, well-drained field. From there the crop is about building the right kind of leaf. Topping (removing the flower head) and repeated desuckering force the plant's growth into the leaves and set their body, weight and nicotine. FCV needs a modest, chloride-free fertiliser dose applied early, because chloride ruins the leaf's burn and colour and late nitrogen gives dark, thick, low-grade leaf; bidi and chewing tobacco are grown for body and take far more nitrogen.
Harvest is by ripeness, not the calendar. FCV leaves are picked ("primed") a few at a time from the bottom up over several rounds as each set yellows, and each batch is flue-cured in a barn over about a week through a controlled temperature rise. Bidi and country tobacco are cut whole and cured on racks or the ground. The crop's defining problems are black shank (a soil water-mould that wilts and kills plants in wet patches), the tobacco caterpillar, aphids that carry virus, and the parasitic weed Orobanche (broomrape) on black soils.
Tobacco has no MSP. FCV realises an auction price that swings with grade, crop size and export demand, and growing more than the licensed area risks unsold leaf. Overview
Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is not one crop in India but several, each with its own belt, curing method and market. Flue-cured Virginia (FCV) is the large commercial and export type, grown on the Karnataka light soils (the "Mysore" belt around Hunsur, Periyapatna and Hassan) and on the light and black soils of coastal and interior Andhra Pradesh. It is cured in purpose-built barns with heat, and it is the only tobacco sold through the auction platforms of the Tobacco Board, a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce that also registers growers and barns and licenses the area each grower may plant.
The other types are grown for the domestic market and traded outside the Board. Bidi (beedi) tobacco comes mainly from the Kheda and Anand districts of Gujarat and from around Nipani on the Karnataka–Maharashtra border; it is sun- and air-cured and sold to bidi rollers. Chewing and scented tobacco is grown in Tamil Nadu, Bihar (the Motihari–Champaran belt) and West Bengal (Cooch Behar, Dinhata). Hookah (hukka) tobacco is a northern crop; cigar-wrapper, cheroot and "Lanka" tobacco come from Tamil Nadu (Dindigul, Vedasandur) and the Godavari delta. Andhra Pradesh grows the most tobacco overall, followed by Karnataka and Gujarat.
Whatever the type, the crop runs on the same logic: raise a strong nursery, transplant onto well-drained ridged land, and then manage the plant to build the specific kind of leaf the market wants. Topping and desuckering redirect growth into the leaves and set their body and nicotine. Nutrition is tuned to the end use — FCV takes a modest, chloride-free dose applied early for a bright, freely burning leaf, while bidi and chewing tobacco are grown for weight and body on much heavier nitrogen. Harvest is governed by leaf ripeness, and for FCV the curing barn is as important as the field: a badly managed cure turns a good crop into low-grade leaf. Nursery sowing
Sow the dust-fine seed, mixed with sand or ash, thinly onto raised, well-drained nursery beds — about 100 m² of nursery raises enough seedlings for one hectare. Water with a fine rose, shade lightly, and guard against damping-off and mole crickets.

Nursery hardening
Reduce watering and shade in the last two to three weeks, and clip the seedling tops once or twice, so the plant that goes to the field is stocky, pencil-thick and about 15 cm tall rather than thin and drawn.

Transplanting
Transplant hardened 6–7 week seedlings onto ridges in the evening, one per hill — FCV at 100 × 55 cm, bidi at about 90 × 60 cm — and water in. Apply the basal fertiliser now. Gap-fill misses within a week.

Establishment & fast growth
The crop roots out and grows away quickly. Light frequent irrigations on light soils; a rainfed black-soil crop lives on stored moisture. Inter-cultivate and earth up to the ridge.

Nitrogen top-dressing
Apply the balance of the nitrogen by about 30 days after transplanting and no later — all the nitrogen must be in early so the leaf ripens and cures to a bright grade.

Topping & desuckering
When about half the plants show flower buttons, snap out the top flower head to a set leaf number, then remove the axillary suckers every 7–10 days by hand or with a suckericide. Topping is what puts body and nicotine into the leaf.

Leaf ripening
The bottom leaves yellow and thicken first. A controlled dry-down now on light soils ripens the leaf for curing; too much water at this stage gives thin, washy, poor-burning leaf.

Climate requirements
For FCV, the weather during the last month — leaf ripening and priming — matters as much as the whole rest of the season. A dry, bright, warm-day / cool-night spell ripens the leaf evenly and lets the barn do its job; unseasonal rain in that window can pull a crop down several grades whatever was done earlier.
Ideal temperature
20–30°C suits the growing crop; warm sunny days with cool nights during leaf ripening give a bright, well-textured FCV leaf, while a hot spell forces thin, papery leaf and continuous cloud gives dark, coarse leaf. Frost kills the crop
Rainfall
A well-distributed 500–700 mm during the growing period is ideal. FCV on black soils is grown almost entirely on stored monsoon moisture; heavy rain during leaf ripening and priming spoils quality, causes barn-rot in the cure, and spreads black shank and leaf spots
Humidity
Moderate humidity suits the crop; long humid, overcast spells favour frog-eye leaf spot, brown spot and mould, and a wet canopy at any stage feeds black shank
Sunlight
Full sun through growth and ripening builds leaf body and the sugars that matter for the cure; a shaded or over-dense crop makes thin, low-grade leaf and holds humidity that favours disease
Soil requirements
Soil choice is really variety-and-market choice: a light, low-fertility, acidic, freely draining soil for a bright FCV leaf; a heavier, more fertile, well-drained black or alluvial soil for a heavy-bodied bidi or chewing leaf. Trying to grow FCV on rich black soil, or bidi on poor sand, fights the crop.
Suitable soil
FCV needs a light, friable, well-drained sandy loam or red loam — the leaf quality it is grown for cannot be produced on heavy soil. Bidi, chewing and country tobacco are grown on heavier alluvial and well-drained black (Vertisol) soils, which hold the moisture a rainfed crop needs and give the body those types are valued for
pH range
FCV does best at pH 5.0–6.5 (mildly acidic); bidi and black-soil tobacco tolerate a near-neutral to mildly alkaline soil. A high-pH or lime-rich soil gives FCV a coarse, dark leaf
Drainage
Free drainage is essential for every type. Tobacco will not tolerate waterlogging even briefly, and a wet, poorly drained patch is exactly where black shank, Pythium and collar rot take hold and spread — ridging and open field drains are standard
Organic matter
FCV is deliberately grown on soils of low to medium fertility and organic matter, because a rich soil or fresh manure gives an over-thick, dark, low-grade leaf. Bidi and chewing tobacco respond to farmyard manure and green manure worked in before planting

Prepare a raised, clean nursery first
Six to seven weeks before transplanting, make raised nursery beds (about 100 m² per hectare of field) on fresh or solarised soil near clean water. Work in fine, well-rotted compost, level to a very fine tilth for the tiny seed, and never site the nursery on soil that grew tobacco or chilli last year.

Plough the main field to a fine, firm tilth
Two or three ploughings with a harrowing and planking give the friable seedbed transplants need. On black soils, complete the deep work while the profile still has moisture.

Ridge the field and open drains
Make ridges and furrows at the planned row spacing and open deep field drains, so the plant sits on a well-aired ridge and water never stands — the single most important step against black shank.

Apply organic matter to bidi / chewing land only
For bidi, chewing and hookah tobacco, incorporate farmyard manure or a green manure before ridging. Do not manure an FCV field — it coarsens and darkens the leaf and lowers the grade.

- Seed rate

- Raise the nursery on solarised or fresh soil and drench against damping-off and Pythium with a recommended fungicide. Dip seedling roots in a recommended fungicide (for black shank) and, where leaf curl or mosaic is a problem, manage the aphid and whitefly vectors in the nursery. Confirm current nursery treatments with CTRI or your KVK.
Sowing guide
The two decisions that matter most at planting are the transplanting date (set it so ripening lands in dry weather) and seedling quality (a stocky, hardened, pencil-thick seedling from a clean nursery establishes fast and evenly; a thin, drawn one from an over-watered or infected nursery gives a slow, patchy, disease-prone stand).

- Sow the nursery from July to September depending on the tract, and transplant hardened 6–7 week seedlings from about mid-September to November, timed so leaf ripening falls in dry, bright weather. Karnataka light-soil FCV is transplanted earlier than the Andhra black-soil crop.

FCV: about half the nitrogen with the full phosphorus and sulphate of potash (a light-soil dose is roughly 60:60:90 kg N:P2O5:K2O/ha) — potash as sulphate, never muriate, because chloride ruins leaf burn and colour. Bidi and chewing tobacco: farmyard manure plus a much higher nitrogen dose (often 150–250 kg N/ha), part basal.

Apply the remaining nitrogen by about 30 days after transplanting and no later. All the nitrogen must be taken up early so the leaf matures and ripens; nitrogen applied after this point gives dark, thick, coarse, low-grade leaf that cures badly.

A sulphate-of-potash-magnesia source or foliar magnesium corrects the "sand-drown" (interveinal yellowing) common on light acidic FCV soils; boron and zinc are corrected on a soil-test basis.

Do not add nitrogen or manure late in the crop. It delays ripening, darkens the leaf, raises undesirable nitrogen compounds, and directly lowers the auction grade and price.
Irrigation schedule

Day 0–10
Light irrigations every 4–7 days on light soils until the seedlings take. A rainfed black-soil crop relies on stored moisture and the transplanting watering.
2. Fast growth to topping
Day 15–50
On irrigated light soils, water at 8–12 day intervals to sustain rapid leaf growth up to topping — this is the crop's main water-demand period.
3. Ripening (controlled dry-down)
Day 60 onward
Ease off water as the lower leaves ripen. A gentle moisture stress now concentrates the leaf and readies it for a bright cure; keeping the crop wet gives thin, washy, poor-burning leaf.

Water-saving tips
- FCV on black soils is grown almost entirely on stored monsoon moisture — the skill is conserving it with timely inter-cultivation and a soil mulch, not adding irrigation.
- On light soils, frequent light irrigations up to topping and then a deliberate dry-down uses less water than keeping the crop wet to the end and gives a better grade.
- Ridge-and-furrow planting lets a light irrigation run quickly down the furrow and drain, wetting the root zone without waterlogging the crown.
Weed management
Common weeds
Organic control
- Two or three inter-cultivations and hand weedings in the first six weeks, ending with earthing up to the ridge, keep the crop clean through its critical period.
- For broomrape: rotate to a non-host (cereal, sorghum), grow a catch crop that makes broomrape germinate and die without a tobacco host, and hand-pull every spike before it sets its dust-like seed — one plant seeds the field for years.
- Keep field bunds and the nursery surrounds weed-free so they do not seed the crop.
Chemical control
- A pre-transplanting or pre-emergence herbicide (for example oxyfluorfen or pendimethalin) per the CTRI package holds the early weed flush; the crop is then kept clean by inter-cultivation.
- Broomrape is not controlled by normal weeding — it is managed by long rotation away from tobacco, a trap or catch crop, hand-pulling the spikes before they seed, and, where recommended, a low-dose directed herbicide programme.
- Never let a herbicide drift onto the leaf — tobacco leaf is the product and is very sensitive to residue and injury.
Nutrient deficiency identification
What a shortage of each nutrient actually looks like on the plant, so you can tell a deficiency apart from a disease before you spray the wrong thing.
Nitrogen
Visible symptom
Pale, yellow-green lower leaves, thin plants and small leaves — but on FCV a mild late nitrogen shortage is deliberately allowed, because it helps the leaf ripen; the fault to avoid is excess, not shortage.
Potassium
Visible symptom
Scorching and browning of the leaf margins and tips of older leaves, a mottled look, and — critically for FCV — a leaf that will not hold a glow when lit. Potash (as sulphate) is a quality nutrient here, not just a yield one.
Magnesium
Visible symptom
"Sand drown" — interveinal yellowing then whitening of the lower and middle leaves while the veins stay green, common on the light, acidic, sandy FCV soils, worst in a wet spell.
Phosphorus
Visible symptom
Stunted, dark bluish-green plants with narrow leaves and delayed maturity; less common than N, K and Mg problems but seen on cold, acidic soils early in the crop.
Boron
Visible symptom
Death of the growing point and topmost young leaves ("top sickness"), brittle distorted new growth, and hollow or corky stem — shows on light sandy soils after a dry then wet spell.

Black shank (Phytophthora)
- Symptoms
- Sudden wilting of the whole plant, often one side first; a soft brown-to-black rot girdling the stem base at and just above the soil line; and, on splitting a dead stem lengthwise, the pith broken into a stack of dark, dried, disc-like plates. Wilt and death spread in patches through low, wet parts of the field, fastest after irrigation or rain.
- Cause
- The soil-borne water-mould Phytophthora nicotianae, which survives for years in the soil, favoured by warm wet soil, waterlogging, heavy or compacted land, and short rotations with tobacco or chilli, tomato and brinjal.
- Treatment
- No cure for an affected plant — rogue it out with the surrounding soil and carry it off the field. Drench the base of nearby plants and the roguing gap with a recommended oomycete fungicide (metalaxyl-M + mancozeb or fosetyl-Al) where registered for tobacco, and repeat after heavy rain.
- Prevention
- Grow a black-shank-resistant variety, rotate 2–3 years with a non-host cereal or sorghum (keep chilli/tomato/brinjal out of that rotation), plant on ridges with sharp field drainage so water never stands, and raise seedlings on clean, well-drained, disease-free nursery soil.
Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) & leaf curl
- Symptoms
- TMV: a light-and-dark green mosaic and mottling of young leaves, puckering, narrowing and distortion, and stunted plants — leaf that grades and cures poorly. Tobacco leaf curl (a whitefly-borne virus): upward or downward curling, thickened veins, leaf-like outgrowths on the underside, and severe stunting.
- Cause
- TMV is extremely stable and spreads by sap — on hands, tools, clothing and by leaf-to-leaf contact during topping and priming — and survives in crop debris and on tobacco products. Leaf curl and mosaic complexes are carried by aphids and whiteflies from the nursery onward.
- Treatment
- No cure. Rogue out infected plants early. For TMV, stop the operation, wash hands and tools, and do not use tobacco while working the crop. For vector-borne viruses, control the aphid and whitefly.
- Prevention
- Rogue infected seedlings in the nursery, wash hands and dip tools in skim milk or a disinfectant before and during topping/priming, keep tobacco products away from the crop, control aphids and whiteflies, and remove volunteer tobacco and weed hosts around the field.
Frog-eye leaf spot & brown spot
- Symptoms
- Frog-eye (Cercospora): small round spots with a pale grey-white centre and a dark brown ring, mainly on the lower, older and ripening leaves. Brown spot (Alternaria): larger brown target-like spots with concentric rings, often at leaf tips and margins, worse on ripe and topped plants. Both riddle the cured leaf and cut its grade.
- Cause
- The fungi Cercospora nicotianae and Alternaria alternata, favoured by humid, overcast weather, dew, dense stands and a ripe or senescing, nutrient-short crop; both are seed- and debris-borne.
- Treatment
- Spray a recommended fungicide (mancozeb or a copper formulation) from the first spots, especially as the crop ripens and after humid weather, and prime ripe leaves promptly so spotted leaf is off the plant.
- Prevention
- Use clean seed and a clean nursery, keep spacing open, balance nutrition (a potassium-short crop spots worse), remove lower senescing leaves, and plough in debris after harvest.
Bacterial (Granville) wilt & black root rot
- Symptoms
- Granville wilt: rapid one-sided then whole-plant wilting in warm weather, a brown streak up the stem, and — cutting the stem and standing it in water — a milky bacterial ooze. Black root rot: stunted, unthrifty plants with blackened, decayed rootlets, worst on cool, wet, near-neutral to alkaline soils.
- Cause
- Granville wilt is the soil bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum; black root rot is the fungus Thielaviopsis basicola. Both build up under short rotations with tobacco and other solanaceous crops and in poorly drained land.
- Treatment
- No effective in-season cure. Rogue wilted plants with their soil, avoid moving soil and water from an infected patch, and improve drainage.
- Prevention
- Long rotation with non-hosts (cereals, sorghum, grasses), resistant or tolerant varieties where available, clean nursery soil, good drainage, and for black root rot avoid over-liming the soil.

What to look for before the damage is visible, and organic options before you reach for a chemical.
Tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura)
- Identification
- Pale green to dark brown caterpillars with dark side markings, feeding in groups at first — skeletonising nursery seedlings and young leaves — then scattering as they grow to chew large ragged holes and bore into the leaf midrib and bud. Look for the scraped, papery patches and the rafts of pale eggs covered in buff hair on the leaf underside.
- Damage
- The number one pest of tobacco from the nursery to topping. A heavy attack can strip a nursery in nights and reduce a field crop's leaf area and grade sharply; midrib and bud feeding ruins the top leaves, which are the valuable ones.
- Organic control
- Scout from the nursery stage, hand-pick and destroy egg masses and the early gregarious larvae with the leaf, set pheromone traps to time action and mass-trap males, encourage birds with perches, and spray a Bt or nucleopolyhedrovirus (SlNPV) or neem formulation against young larvae.
- Chemical control
- A need-based spray of a recommended insecticide (for example an emamectin, chlorantraniliprole or novaluron type per the CTRI package) targeted at young larvae in the evening when egg masses and early larvae cross the local threshold. Rotate modes of action — Spodoptera develops resistance quickly.
Tobacco aphid (Myzus persicae)
- Identification
- Dense colonies of small green to pinkish soft-bodied insects on the growing point and the underside of the top young leaves, with sticky honeydew and black sooty mould below them, from the nursery onward.
- Damage
- Sap feeding curls and stunts the top leaves and fouls them with honeydew and mould, lowering grade — but the greater damage is as a virus vector: the aphid carries mosaic, leaf-curl and vein-banding viruses into the nursery and field.
- Organic control
- Rogue virus-infected plants, conserve ladybird beetles, lacewings and syrphid flies, use yellow sticky traps in the nursery, and spray neem or an insecticidal-soap formulation on early colonies.
- Chemical control
- A need-based spray of a recommended systemic or contact aphicide, starting in the nursery so virus-carrying aphids are knocked down before transplanting; avoid repeated use of one group.
Ground beetles, crickets & cutworms (nursery and early field)
- Identification
- Mole crickets and field crickets that tunnel and cut seedlings at the soil line in the nursery and just after transplanting; grey cutworm caterpillars that cut young transplants at night, leaving them lying; and ground / blister beetles (Mylabris) that chew flowers and tender leaves later.
- Damage
- Patchy gaps in the nursery and in the newly transplanted field that cost time to gap-fill; blister beetles damage the top leaves and are also a hazard to handle.
- Organic control
- Flood the nursery briefly to bring out crickets, keep the nursery surrounds clean and grass-free, hand-collect cutworms at night around gaps, and hand-pick blister beetles (with gloves) in the morning.
- Chemical control
- A recommended soil or bait application in the nursery and a spot drench around transplanting gaps where cricket or cutworm damage crosses the threshold; a need-based spray for blister beetles at flowering.
Common mistakes to avoid
The mistakes that cost growers the most, ranked by how often they show up in the field — not in the order you might expect.

Applying nitrogen or manure late in the crop
Why it hurts
Late nitrogen is the classic FCV mistake — it delays ripening and gives dark, thick, coarse leaf with high nitrogen compounds that cures to a low grade and a low auction price. All the nitrogen must be in within about 30 days of transplanting.

Using a chloride fertiliser (MOP / cheap complexes) on FCV
Why it hurts
Chloride makes the leaf non-burning — it will not hold a glow — and dulls its colour, which is exactly what the auction buyer rejects. FCV potash must be sulphate of potash, and complexes must be chloride-free.

Transplanting into a wet or poorly drained field
Why it hurts
Waterlogging even briefly triggers black shank, Pythium and collar rot, which then spread in patches. Ridge the field, open drains, and never plant where water stands.

Continuous tobacco on the same land
Why it hurts
Short rotations build up black shank, Granville wilt, root-knot nematode and the parasitic weed Orobanche until the field becomes unviable. A 2–3 year rotation with a non-host cereal or sorghum is essential.

Skipping or delaying topping and desuckering
Why it hurts
Left to flower and sucker, the plant makes thin, light, low-nicotine leaf and low yield. Timely topping to the right leaf number, and desuckering every 7–10 days, is what builds body, weight and value.

Harvesting unripe or over-ripe leaf
Why it hurts
Green, unripe leaf cures muddy and dark; over-ripe leaf cures thin and breaks up. Each set of leaves must be primed at its own ripeness — indicated by yellowing, a gummy feel and a downward angle — not on a fixed date.

Rushing or mismanaging the flue-cure
Why it hurts
Ramping the barn temperature too fast "scalds" and sets green colour; too slow and humid gives sponged, barn-rotted leaf. A good field crop can be turned into low-grade leaf in the barn in a week — the cure schedule is as important as the field.

Planting more than the licensed / authorised area
Why it hurts
For FCV, growing beyond the Tobacco Board-authorised crop size and registered barn capacity risks unsold leaf and pulls down the auction price for everyone. Plan the area to the licence.
Harvesting
FCV: prime (pick) individual leaves as each set ripens, from the bottom of the plant upward, in 5 to 7 rounds spread over 6 to 8 weeks. A leaf is ripe when it lightens to yellow-green, feels gummy, droops, and the midrib whitens. Bidi, chewing and country tobacco: cut the whole plant near the base when most leaves have matured, usually 100–130 days after transplanting.
Signs it is ready
- FCV leaf: yellow-green colour, a gummy feel, a downward droop and a whitening midrib
- Spots of gum or "tobacco tears" on a ripe leaf surface
- Lower leaves ripening first; the plant ripens from the bottom up
- Whole-plant types: leaves thick, brittle at the tip, and the plant a uniform yellow-green
Tools
- Hands for priming FCV leaf; a knife or small sickle for cutting whole-plant types
- Curing barn with flues, racks and a thermometer for FCV; open racks, strings or a drying floor for sun/air-cured types
- Twine and tying sticks or clips to load leaf into the barn; bulk-curing systems where used
- Grading table and light for sorting cured leaf into Board grades before baling
Expected yield
A well-managed FCV crop gives about 1,800–2,500 kg of cured leaf per hectare (roughly 7–10 q/acre); the Andhra and Karnataka belt averages sit near 2,000 kg/ha. Bidi tobacco yields about 1,200–1,800 kg/ha of cured leaf, chewing tobacco 1,500–2,500 kg/ha. Value per kilogram is high and varies enormously by grade, so leaf quality matters far more than raw weight.
Post-harvest & storage
Storage
Cured leaf must be brought to the right "case" (moisture) — pliable, not dry-brittle or damp — then graded and baled. Store bales in a dry, well-ventilated store off the floor, away from any smell (kerosene, pesticide, onion) that the leaf will absorb, and protect against the cigarette beetle and tobacco moth, which can ruin stored leaf. FCV is generally sold within weeks at the nearest auction rather than held long.
Packaging
Graded leaf is baled or packed to the Board / trade specification for FCV; bidi and chewing leaf is bundled or bagged to buyer requirement. Keep grades separate — a mixed bale is down-graded to its worst leaf.
Transportation
Transport baled leaf dry and covered, protected from rain and from contact with strong-smelling cargo. Damp leaf heats and moulds in transit; wet leaf is rejected at the floor.
Shelf life
Properly cured, graded and stored leaf keeps for one to two years and in fact improves with a period of natural ageing, but only if it is kept dry, in good case, and free of the cigarette beetle and tobacco moth. Leaf in poor case moulds or dries and crumbles within weeks.

Frequently asked questions
What is FCV tobacco, and how is it different from bidi tobacco?
FCV stands for flue-cured Virginia — a light, bright tobacco grown mostly on the light soils of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and cured with heat in a closed barn (the "flues" carry the heat). It is the main export type and is sold only at Tobacco Board auction floors. Bidi tobacco is a heavier, darker, more aromatic leaf grown mainly in Gujarat and around Nipani, sun- and air-cured in the open, and sold directly to bidi manufacturers. They are different varieties, grown on different soils, with different fertiliser and curing, for different markets.
Do I need to register with the Tobacco Board to grow FCV tobacco?
Yes. For FCV tobacco, growers and their curing barns must be registered with the Tobacco Board, and the Board fixes an authorised crop size each season and issues grower-wise area permits. Selling FCV outside the registered auction system, or growing well beyond your authorised area, is not permitted and risks the leaf being unsold. Bidi, chewing, hookah and cigar tobacco are not auctioned through the Board and are traded in the open market, though other regulations still apply.
Is there an MSP for tobacco?
No. Tobacco is not a CACP-notified crop and has no Minimum Support Price. FCV leaf realises whatever price it fetches at the Tobacco Board auction, which varies by grade, by the size of the crop, and by domestic and export demand. The Board publishes daily average auction prices. Non-FCV types are sold in the open market at negotiated prices.
Why must FCV tobacco fertiliser be chloride-free?
Chloride ions taken up by the plant stay in the cured leaf and stop it from burning properly — an FCV leaf with too much chloride will not hold a glow when lit and has a dull colour, which is exactly what auction buyers reject. So FCV potash is given as sulphate of potash (SOP), not muriate of potash (MOP), and any complex fertiliser used must be a chloride-free grade. Bidi and chewing tobacco are less sensitive on this point.
What are topping and desuckering, and why do they matter?
Topping is snapping out the flower head (and often a few top leaves) once about half the plants have flower buttons, so the plant stops putting energy into seed. Desuckering is removing the side shoots ("suckers") that then sprout from every leaf axil, done by hand every 7–10 days or with a suckericide. Together they force the plant's growth into the leaves, which is what builds leaf body, weight, thickness and nicotine — and therefore yield and grade. A crop left to flower and sucker gives thin, light, low-value leaf.
How is flue-curing done?
Primed FCV leaf is tied or clipped and hung in a closed barn, and the temperature is raised in stages by heat carried through metal flues (so smoke never touches the leaf). First a warm, humid "yellowing" phase (about 32–38°C) turns the leaf from green to yellow; then "colour fixing" and "leaf drying" at rising temperatures lock the yellow and dry the blade; finally "stem drying" up to about 74–77°C dries the midrib. The whole cure takes roughly a week per batch and its schedule is as important as anything done in the field — a rushed or humid cure ruins good leaf.
What is black shank and how do I stop it?
Black shank is a soil water-mould disease (Phytophthora nicotianae) that rots the roots and blackens the stem base, so plants wilt and die in patches, fastest in wet, poorly drained parts of the field after irrigation or rain. Split a dead stem and the pith is in dark, disc-like plates. It survives in the soil for years. Control is a black-shank-resistant variety, a 2–3 year rotation with a non-host such as a cereal or sorghum (no chilli, tomato or brinjal in the rotation), ridge planting with sharp drainage, a clean nursery, and a base drench with a recommended fungicide where the disease is present.
How much tobacco seed do I need per acre?
Very little. Tobacco seed is dust-fine — roughly 2.5–3 grams per square metre of nursery bed, and about 100 square metres of nursery raises enough seedlings to transplant a hectare (about 40 m² per acre). So a few hundred grams of seed covers a whole hectare. The seed is never sown direct in the field; the crop is always transplanted from the nursery.
Which tobacco variety should I grow?
It depends entirely on your tobacco type, your market and, for FCV, your Tobacco Board region and soil class. For FCV, grow a CTRI-released variety notified for your region — for example varieties recommended for the Karnataka Light Soils, or the Northern/Southern Light or Black Soils of Andhra Pradesh — choosing one with black-shank tolerance if that disease is in your field. For bidi tobacco, grow the Anand or Nipani varieties suited to the Charotar or Nipani tracts. Always use certified seed of a notified variety, not saved or unknown seed.
What yield can I expect from an FCV crop?
A well-grown FCV crop yields about 1,800–2,500 kg of cured leaf per hectare, and the Andhra and Karnataka averages are around 2,000 kg/ha (roughly 8 quintals per acre). But because the auction price varies several-fold between the top bright grades and low grades, the money depends far more on leaf quality — nursery, nutrition, topping, ripe priming and a clean cure — than on squeezing out extra weight.
