Overview

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, grown almost entirely as Bt hybrids since the early 2000s) covers roughly 12 million hectares in India, concentrated in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana on rainfed and irrigated black cotton soil.

It is a long, capital-intensive crop — six months in the field, picking spread over three or four staggered rounds, and a pest that has partly overcome the very Bt trait bred to control it. A hard sowing window, the non-Bt refuge rows every certified packet includes, and mandatory end-of-season stalk destruction matter as much as the spray schedule that gets all the attention.

Climate requirements

Cotton is sown right at the start of the monsoon specifically so boll development and picking land in the drier months that follow. A late-sown crop pushes picking into a wetter window that stains lint, encourages boll rot, and — worse — lines up with the peak of the pink bollworm season.

    FYM or compost incorporation

    Working 8–10 tonnes/ha of farmyard manure or compost into the last ploughing before sowing rebuilds the organic matter this long-duration crop draws down heavily.

    Ridges and furrows

Why are my cotton leaves turning red?

Both worsen boll development and fibre quality, so a soil test is worth doing rather than guessing which nutrient is short.

Why are my cotton bolls not opening properly?
