Overview
Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is grown across roughly 0.6 million hectares in India, a fraction of wheat's area, almost entirely as a rabi crop on land wheat would struggle with — saline and alkaline soil, shallow or low-fertility fields, and the drier margins of the rabi belt. Rajasthan alone accounts for close to half the country's area, with Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Bihar making up most of the rest.
The crop's whole identity is a trade against wheat: lower yield ceiling, but meaningfully lower water, nitrogen and input cost, and a stand that survives conditions that would thin out or fail a wheat crop outright. There are two real markets for the same grain — feed and food barley sold like any other cereal, and malt barley bought by breweries and distilleries at a real price premium but against a strict protein and grading specification that a feed-grown crop will not meet.

Why is my barley crop lodging (falling over)?
Almost always excess nitrogen — a dose closer to wheat's than barley's actual need produces a taller, top-heavy canopy that a wind or rain event tips over. Keeping to barley's lower recommended nitrogen dose, not wheat's, is the direct fix.
