Overview

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is one of India’s most valuable spice crops, grown for its aromatic underground rhizome from Kerala and Karnataka to the north-east, largely as a rainfed kharif crop.

It is a long, demanding crop — nearly nine months in the ground — and everything about it turns on one thing: drainage. Ginger grows in warm, wet weather but its rhizome rots in standing water, and soft rot (rhizome rot) can destroy whole beds in a wet week. Raised beds, perfect drainage and healthy seed are the crop’s foundation.

The other defining practices are heavy mulching — laid at planting and renewed, to hold moisture, suppress weeds and protect the beds — and using disease-free, treated seed rhizomes, because both soft rot and nematodes travel in the seed. Climate requirements

Ginger loves warmth and moisture but will not tolerate its rhizome sitting in water — the whole crop is a balance between plenty of rain and perfect drainage. Grow it on raised beds and choose land that never waterlogs, even in the heaviest monsoon spell.

Soil requirements

A loose, organic-rich soil that drains freely is the ideal. Never grow ginger on heavy, poorly drained land, and never plant it on the same land year after year — soft rot and nematodes build up in the soil, so a long rotation (3–4 years) away from ginger and other rhizome crops is essential.

Sowing guide

Plant with the early rains so the crop is well-established before the monsoon peaks. Water-saving tips

  • Perfect drainage channels between beds are as important as irrigation — the crop is lost far more often to too much water than too little.
