Avocado (Persea americana) is a subtropical-to-tropical evergreen fruit tree, grown commercially in India in only a handful of hill tracts: Coorg, Chikmagalur and Shivamogga in Karnataka; Wayanad in Kerala; the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal hills in Tamil Nadu; and Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong in the eastern Himalayan foothills, where mid-altitude, summer-rainfall conditions suit it.

The tree is unusually demanding about two things most Indian fruit crops tolerate reasonably well: it cannot survive the frost and hot, dry winds of the northern plains, and it is intolerant of both waterlogging and soil salinity, so a planting site needs real, year-round drainage, not just decent soil.

Avocado's entire Indian growing map is drawn by two climate limits at once: it cannot take the plains' frost and dry heat, and it cannot take waterlogging, which together confine it to specific mid-altitude hill pockets with reliable drainage rather than any one large contiguous belt.

Soil requirements
