Overview
Red spider mites are minute (under 0.5 mm), eight-legged relatives of spiders — not insects — that live in colonies on the underside of leaves. Individually they look like moving red, orange or greenish specks, easiest to see against a white paper held under a tapped leaf.
They pierce individual leaf cells and suck the contents, so the upper leaf surface fills with tiny pale or yellow dots (stippling) that merge into a bronzed, dusty, dried look. In a heavy attack the colony spins a fine silk webbing over the shoot tips. Mites explode in hot, dry weather — and, crucially, broad-spectrum insecticide sprays that kill their natural predators often trigger a worse mite outbreak.
How to identify it
- Fine pale or yellow stippling (tiny dots) on the upper leaf surface that spreads until the leaf looks bronzed, dusty and dry.
- Tap a leaf over white paper and watch for tiny moving specks — red, orange or green — to confirm mites rather than a disease.
- Fine silk webbing over shoot tips and leaf undersides in a heavy infestation.
- Damage starts on older/lower leaves in a hot, dry spell and moves up; leaves eventually curl and drop.
The damage it does
- Stippled, bronzed, dried leaves with reduced photosynthesis, leaf drop and stunted, weakened plants.
- In fruit crops and tea, quality and yield fall as the canopy bronzes; webbing fouls the produce.
- Explosive population growth in heat means a light stippling can become whole-plant bronzing within a week or two.
- Resurgence after insecticide sprays — killing predators lets mites rebound worse than before.
When to act
- Check leaf undersides (tap test on white paper) twice a week in hot, dry spells, when mites build fastest.
- Act on early stippling before webbing appears — once the colony webs over the tips it is much harder to reach.
- Remember mites are not insects: many insecticides do not kill them and some make them worse, so identify correctly before spraying.
Organic & cultural control
- Conserve predatory mites (Phytoseiulus, Amblyseius) and other natural enemies by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides that trigger mite resurgence.
- A strong water spray on the leaf undersides knocks mites off and raises humidity, which they dislike; keep the crop well irrigated.
- Spray wettable sulphur or neem oil, both effective and soft on predators; remove and destroy heavily webbed shoots.
- Avoid dust and water stress on field margins, which are classic mite hotspots.
Chemical control
- Use a specific acaricide (miticide), not a general insecticide — CIB&RC-registered options include spiromesifen 22.9% SC, propargite 57% EC and abamectin 1.9% EC, chosen for your crop.
- Spray the leaf undersides thoroughly to run-off, and repeat after 7–10 days to catch newly-hatched mites, since eggs survive one spray.
- Rotate acaricide groups to avoid resistance, and never rely on repeated broad-spectrum insecticide, which worsens mites.

Frequently asked questions
My leaves look dusty and bronzed with tiny pale dots. Is it a disease?
Probably not — that fine pale stippling turning to a bronzed, dusty look is classic red spider mite damage. Confirm by tapping a leaf over white paper and watching for tiny moving red/green specks. If you see webbing over the shoot tips too, it is a heavy mite infestation, not a disease.
I sprayed insecticide but the mites got worse. Why?
Mites are not insects, so many insecticides do not kill them — and broad-spectrum sprays kill the predatory mites that keep them in check, letting the mites rebound worse than before. Use a specific acaricide (miticide) instead, conserve predators, and lean on water sprays, sulphur and neem.
Why do mites explode in the hot dry season?
Red spider mites breed extremely fast in heat and dislike humidity and rain, so hot dry spells are when they multiply unchecked. Keeping the crop well irrigated, spraying water on leaf undersides, and avoiding dust and predator-killing sprays all blunt the flare-up.
