Overview
Mustard (Brassica juncea) is grown across roughly 7 million hectares in India, mostly as a sole rabi crop on lighter soils and residual moisture where wheat would need more water than is available.
It is a forgiving crop by cereal standards — one or two irrigations, modest fertilizer, and it tolerates soil that would give wheat a poor stand. The two things that actually move the yield needle are sulphur nutrition, which most fields are short of without anyone testing for it, and mustard aphid, which can undo a season in three weeks if it is not caught early.

- Symptoms
- White, shiny pustules on the underside of leaves; in a severe attack the growing tip and inflorescence swell and distort into a “staghead”, destroying seed set on that branch entirely.
- Cause
- Fungus Albugo candida; favoured by cool, humid weather and heavier morning dew, spreading fastest from December through February.
- Treatment
- Spray metalaxyl + mancozeb or a similar combination fungicide at first sign of pustules; remove and destroy stagheads before they release spores.
- Prevention
- Grow a variety with current white rust tolerance for your zone, avoid excess nitrogen which thickens the canopy and holds humidity longer, and rotate out of mustard for a season where staghead has been heavy.
Alternaria Blight
- Symptoms
- Dark brown, concentric ring spots (a target-board pattern) on leaves, stems and pods, starting on older leaves and spreading upward as the season progresses.
- Cause
- Fungus Alternaria brassicae; favoured by humid weather with intermittent light rain or heavy dew during pod development.
- Treatment
- Spray mancozeb or difenoconazole at first appearance, repeating after 10–15 days if humid weather continues.
- Prevention
- Wider spacing and avoiding a dense, over-fertilized canopy both slow its spread; certified seed cuts the seed-borne carryover that starts many infections.
Powdery Mildew
- Symptoms
- White powdery patches on leaves, stems and pods, most common on a late-sown crop moving into a warmer March.
- Cause
- Fungus Erysiphe cruciferarum; favoured by warm days, cool nights and a crop pushed later than the recommended sowing window.
- Treatment
- A sulphur-based fungicide or wettable sulphur dust checks it effectively once it appears.
- Prevention
- Sowing on time is the best single prevention — a timely sown crop largely finishes pod-fill before the warm, dry conditions that favour this disease set in.
Sclerotinia Stem Rot
- Symptoms
- Water-soaked lesions on the stem near ground level, developing into a white, cottony fungal growth and eventual lodging of the whole plant.
- Cause
- Fungus Sclerotinia sclerotinia, favoured by a dense, over-irrigated canopy and cool, humid conditions during flowering.
- Treatment
- No effective in-season cure once stems rot; remove and destroy infected plants to reduce sclerotia (survival bodies) returning to the soil.
- Prevention
- Avoid over-irrigation and excess plant density — both keep the canopy humid at ground level — and rotate out of mustard and other Brassica crops where stem rot has appeared before.

Mustard Aphid
- Identification
- Small yellowish-green to greyish-green insects clustering densely on the inflorescence, tender shoots and developing pods, usually from mid-January onward.
- Damage
- The single most damaging pest of the crop — heavy colonies stunt the inflorescence, abort flowers and pods, and can cut yield by a third or more if left unchecked for even two to three weeks.
- Organic control
- Conserve natural predators (ladybird beetles, syrphid fly larvae) by avoiding unnecessary early spraying; a 5% neem-oil or neem-seed-kernel-extract spray checks moderate colonies.
- Chemical control
- Spray dimethoate or imidacloprid as soon as aphids are seen on 50%+ of plants, before colonies build past the point a single spray can control them — waiting even a week costs more yield than the spray.
Painted Bug
- Identification
- Small black-and-orange shield-shaped bugs feeding on young seedlings and later on developing pods, most damaging in the first month after emergence.
- Damage
- Sap removal wilts and can kill young seedlings outright in a heavy attack, thinning the stand before it has even established.
- Organic control
- Early morning hand-collection while bugs are sluggish in the cool; destroying crop residue and volunteer Brassica weeds removes their off-season shelter.

- A dust or spray of malathion or quinalphos on seedlings if damage is spreading beyond isolated patches.
Sawfly
- Identification
- Dark, caterpillar-like larvae feeding on leaves in the first few weeks after emergence, capable of skeletonising young leaves rapidly.
