Overview
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is one of India’s most important seed spices, grown mainly as a rabi crop in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat for its aromatic dry seed (dhania), and also for the fresh green leaf (kothmir/hara dhania).
The crop’s one distinctive step is splitting the seed. Each round coriander "seed" is really a fruit containing two seeds; gently rubbing it to break it into halves before sowing gives a faster, more even germination — the job newcomers most often skip, to their cost.
From there, coriander is a cool-season crop that rewards restraint with water. Its two main problems — stem gall and wilt — are both worsened by excess irrigation at flowering, and aphids arrive as the crop matures.
