Overview
Maize (Zea mays) is grown across roughly 10 million hectares in India, mostly as a kharif crop, with a smaller, higher-yielding rabi and spring crop in irrigated pockets of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
It is the most nitrogen-responsive of India’s major cereals and the least tolerant of standing water — a well-fed but poorly drained crop can lose a third of its stand to root suffocation alone in the first three weeks. Fall armyworm, a pest that only reached India in 2018, is now the single biggest reason a crop underperforms its potential.

- Symptoms
- Long, greyish-green to tan, cigar-shaped lesions on leaves, starting on lower leaves and moving upward; a heavy attack can blight most of the canopy before grain fill finishes.
- Cause
- Fungus Exserohilum turcicum, favoured by cool nights, heavy dew and humid days, common in a delayed or extended kharif season.
- Treatment
- Spray mancozeb or propiconazole at first appearance, repeating after 10–12 days if humid weather continues.
- Prevention
- Grow a resistant hybrid where the disease has a local history, and rotate out of maize for a season on badly affected fields, since the fungus survives on residue.
Maydis Leaf Blight
- Symptoms
- Smaller, tan, rectangular lesions bound by leaf veins — distinguishable from Turcicum blight mainly by their shape and vein-limited spread.
- Cause
- Fungus Bipolaris maydis, favoured by warm, humid weather; more common in southern and coastal growing tracts.
- Treatment
- A mancozeb spray at first sign, as for Turcicum blight.
- Prevention
- Resistant hybrid choice and residue management are the most effective long-term controls.
Banded Leaf and Sheath Blight
- Symptoms
- Water-soaked, banded lesions on the leaf sheath near the base of the plant, spreading upward and eventually girdling the stalk in a severe attack, causing lodging.
- Cause
- Fungus Rhizoctonia solani f. sp. sasakii, favoured by dense planting, high humidity and excess nitrogen, spreading fastest after tasselling.
- Treatment
- Remove and destroy infected lower leaves and sheaths early; a validamycin or hexaconazole spray on the lower stalk checks spread.
- Prevention
- Avoid over-dense sowing, balance nitrogen, and destroy crop residue after harvest rather than leaving it in the field, since the fungus survives on it.
Post-flowering Stalk Rot
- Symptoms
- Stalks near the base turn soft, discoloured and hollow after flowering, and plants lodge or snap in even moderate wind close to harvest.
- Cause
- A complex of Fusarium and Macrophomina fungi, worse in a crop stressed by drought or by excess nitrogen relative to potassium late in the season.
- Treatment
- No in-season cure; harvest lodging-prone fields early rather than risk further stalk and ear loss.
- Prevention
- Balanced potassium relative to nitrogen, avoiding late-season moisture stress, and timely harvest are the most effective preventions.

Fall Armyworm
- Identification
- Caterpillars with a distinctive inverted-Y mark on the head, feeding inside the whorl of young plants and leaving ragged, windowpane-like holes and visible frass (droppings).
- Damage
- The single biggest new threat to Indian maize since its arrival in 2018 — a heavy, uncontrolled attack at the whorl stage can cut yield by a third or more, and it still has no effective natural predator ceiling in most tracts.
- Organic control
- Scout the whorl of young plants twice a week from emergence; a neem seed kernel extract or Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) spray directed into the whorl controls early-stage larvae.
- Chemical control
- Spray emamectin benzoate or spinetoram directed into the whorl at first sign of damage — coverage into the whorl matters more than the product choice, since older larvae hide deep inside it.
Stem Borer
- Identification
- Pinkish caterpillars boring into the stem, visible as small round holes with frass near the entry point, usually in the first month after emergence.
- Damage
- Boring damages the growing point in young plants, causing the classic “dead heart” symptom — the central whorl dries and can be pulled out easily.
- Organic control
- Release Trichogramma parasitoid wasps at the egg-laying stage; remove and destroy affected plants showing dead heart.
- Chemical control
- A carbofuran or chlorantraniliprole granule applied into the whorl of young plants controls it effectively.
Shoot Fly
- Identification
- Small maggots boring into the central shoot of very young seedlings, within the first two weeks after emergence.
- Damage
- Kills the growing point of the seedling, producing a dead heart similar to stem borer damage but earlier in the crop’s life, sometimes forcing gap-filling or resowing.
- Organic control
- Timely sowing with adequate moisture reduces the seedling-stress window shoot fly exploits; a higher seed rate provides a buffer against stand loss.
