Watermelon, or tarbooz (Citrullus lanatus), is a warm-season trailing vine grown for its large, sweet fruit. It is a summer crop, sown from November through March so that the fruit fills and ripens in the dry pre-monsoon heat of April to June. Climate requirements
Everything about the crop calendar is aimed at ripening the fruit in hot, bright, rain-free weather — a melon that matures under cloud or in the first monsoon showers loses the sweetness the whole crop is grown for.
Ideal temperature
A hot-season crop that grows best at 24–35°C, with plenty of bright sun. Below about 18°C the vine barely grows and fruit set and sugar are poor; frost kills it outright. Fruit ripening in genuine summer heat is what makes a sweet, dark-fleshed melon.
Rainfall
Grown in the dry season on irrigation or river-bed moisture. Rain during flowering causes poor pollination and fruit drop; rain or high humidity during ripening causes cracking, low sugar, fungal fruit rot and a fruit that will not travel — which is why the crop is timed to finish before the monsoon.
Humidity
Low humidity suits it. Humid, overcast spells bring on downy mildew, powdery mildew, anthracnose and gummy stem blight and spoil fruit quality.

Soil requirements
River-bed sand looks like poor land but is close to ideal for watermelon — it is warm, bottomless for the roots, drains instantly, and holds sub-surface moisture the deep taproot can reach all season.
Suitable soil
Light, warm, deep, free-draining soil — sandy loam, loamy sand and river-bed alluvium are ideal because they warm up fast in spring, drain well, and let the taproot go deep to find moisture. Heavy clay stays cold and wet, delays the crop and rots the vine base.
pH range
Best at pH 6.0–7.0; tolerates up to about 7.5. Strongly acid or saline soils cut yield and sugar.
Drainage
Free drainage is essential; the vine base and roots rot quickly in wet soil. On heavier land the crop must be grown on ridges or raised beds.
Organic matter
Moderate. A basal dose of well-rotted farmyard manure improves the light soils the crop favours, but watermelon is not a heavy feeder and too much nitrogen grows vine at the expense of fruit.

Sowing guide
A pre-germinated seed placed into warm, moist soil gets the seedling up and past the red-pumpkin-beetle window faster — a slow, cool-soil stand is the one that beetles thin out.

Water-saving tips
- Drip irrigation with plastic mulch is now standard on commercial watermelon — it cuts water use by a third or more, keeps the fruit clean and off wet soil, and lets fertiliser be spoon-fed through the season.
- The river-bed pit method uses almost no applied water: the pit reaches moist sand and the deep taproot follows the falling water table down through the season.
- The most valuable water decision is to stop early — the last 1–2 weeks should be dry, both to build sugar and to stop the fruit cracking.

Common weeds
Organic control
- Two hand-weedings before the vines cover the ground — at about 15–20 and 35 days — handle most of the weed pressure; once the vine mat closes it suppresses later weeds itself.
- Straw or plastic mulch on the bed suppresses weeds, conserves moisture and keeps the developing fruit off damp soil where it would rot.
- Pull out any wild or volunteer cucurbits nearby — they host the same fruit fly, mildews and viruses and keep the pressure on the crop high.
Chemical control
- A pre-emergence herbicide cleared for cucurbits, applied to the bed before the vines run, controls early weeds; after that the crop is hand-weeded because the sprawling vine cannot be sprayed over.
- Plastic mulch removes almost all in-row weeding; confirm any herbicide for the inter-row with your KVK.
Nutrient deficiency identification

Scorched leaf margins on older leaves and small, pale-fleshed, low-sugar fruit with poor keeping quality — the most yield- and quality-limiting deficiency in watermelon.

Fusarium wilt
- Symptoms
- Sudden wilting of a runner or the whole vine, often on one side first, with yellowing lower leaves and a brown streak in the split stem near the base; plants collapse as the fruit is filling.
- Cause
- The soil fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum, which survives for years in the soil and builds up wherever watermelon or other cucurbits are grown too often.
- Treatment
- No cure for an infected plant; remove and destroy it. Soil drenching with a bio-agent (Trichoderma) around healthy plants can slow spread.
- Prevention
- A 3–4 year rotation away from cucurbits, a wilt-resistant variety such as Arka Manik, grafting onto bottle-gourd or pumpkin rootstock on badly infested land, and good drainage.
Anthracnose
- Symptoms
- Dark, sunken, water-soaked spots on leaves, stems and fruit; on the fruit the spots enlarge into circular, sunken, cracked lesions with pink spore masses in wet weather, and the fruit rots.
- Cause
- The fungus Colletotrichum orbiculare, spread by rain splash and favoured by warm, humid, wet weather.
- Treatment
- A protective mancozeb, chlorothalonil or copper spray from the first spots, repeated in wet weather, observing the pre-harvest interval.
- Prevention
- Disease-free seed, a resistant variety (Arka Manik), crop rotation, wider spacing for airflow, and avoiding work in the field when the vines are wet.
Downy and powdery mildew
- Symptoms
- Downy mildew: angular yellow patches on the upper leaf with a grey-purple mould underneath, in humid weather. Powdery mildew: white powdery patches on both leaf surfaces, in warm dry weather. Both defoliate the vine and expose the fruit to sun-scald.
- Cause
- Pseudoperonospora cubensis (downy) and Podosphaera / Erysiphe fungi (powdery), the two most common leaf diseases of cucurbits.
- Treatment
- A downy-specific fungicide for downy mildew and wettable sulphur or a recommended fungicide for powdery mildew, started at first symptoms.
- Prevention
- Resistant varieties where available (Arka Manik), adequate spacing, avoiding dense nitrogen-pushed growth, and drip rather than overhead irrigation.
Bacterial fruit blotch
- Symptoms
- Small water-soaked spots on seedling leaves, and dark green, greasy, spreading blotches on the upper surface of the fruit that later crack and ooze; the flesh underneath rots.
- Cause
- The seed-borne bacterium Acidovorax citrulli; a single infected seed lot can start an outbreak that ruins a field.
- Treatment
- No effective cure in the field; remove affected fruit and plants, and a copper spray from early fruit set can slow spread in a wet season.
- Prevention
- Use tested, certified seed from a reputable source, avoid overhead irrigation, do not work in wet fields, and rotate away from cucurbits.

Melon fruit fly
- Identification
- A brownish fly a little larger than a housefly that stings young fruit to lay eggs, leaving a small puncture and often a drop of gum; the fruit then develops a soft, brown, maggot-filled rot and drops.
- Damage
- The single most damaging pest of watermelon — losses of a third to a half of the fruit are common where it is not managed from fruit set.
- Organic control
- Cue-lure or methyl-eugenol pheromone traps and protein-bait spots from the start of flowering, prompt collection and deep burial of all stung and fallen fruit, ploughing the field after harvest to expose pupae, and bagging individual fruit on small plots.
- Chemical control
- Bait sprays (a protein hydrolysate plus a small dose of insecticide) applied as spots rather than a full cover spray, from fruit set; avoid spraying open flowers so bees are not harmed.
Red pumpkin beetle
- Identification
- Bright orange-red beetles about 6–8 mm long that feed on the cotyledons and young leaves, cutting round holes; the grubs feed on roots and on fruit lying on the soil.
- Damage
- Can destroy a seedling stand within a few days of germination, and grub damage scars fruit that touches the ground.
- Organic control
- Cover seedlings with net or a light cloth until they have 4–5 true leaves, hand-collect beetles in the early morning when they are sluggish, dust with ash or neem, and delay sowing past a known beetle peak where possible.
- Chemical control
- Seed treatment with imidacloprid, and a foliar insecticide at the cotyledon-to-2-leaf stage if beetles are numerous.
Aphids
- Identification
- Colonies of small green, yellow or black soft-bodied insects on the growing tips and the underside of young leaves, with sticky honeydew and curled leaves.
- Damage
- Sap loss stunts young vines, but the real damage is that aphids carry watermelon mosaic and cucumber mosaic virus, which mottle and distort the leaves and give small, bumpy, unmarketable fruit.
- Organic control
- Reflective plastic mulch to deter incoming aphids, neem sprays, and conserving ladybird beetles and lacewings; remove nearby weed and volunteer-cucurbit hosts.
- Chemical control
- A recommended systemic insecticide when colonies build up early, especially near virus-source fields, rotated between groups.
Leaf-eating and sap-sucking complex
- Identification
- Epilachna (hadda) beetles skeletonising leaves, leaf miner trails, thrips causing silvery leaf patches, and mites causing fine stippling and bronzing in hot dry spells.
- Damage
- Together these reduce the leaf area that fills and sweetens the fruit; thrips and mites flare fast in the pre-monsoon heat.

- Regular scouting, neem-based sprays, yellow and blue sticky traps for thrips, and preserving natural enemies by keeping broad-spectrum sprays to a minimum.

Why it hurts
Water in the last one to two weeks makes the fruit take up water fast — it comes out pale, watery, low in sugar and prone to splitting on the vine or in transit. A dry finish is what makes a sweet, saleable melon.

Roughly 20–35 t/ha for open-pollinated varieties (Sugar Baby around 20–30 t/ha) and 40–60 t/ha for hybrids (Kiran 45–55, Arka Manik up to 60) on well-managed drip-and-mulch beds. On an acre this is about 120–250 quintals.

Storage
Watermelon does not ripen further after cutting, so it must be harvested ripe. Whole fruit keeps 2–3 weeks at 10–15°C and moderate humidity; below about 7°C it suffers chilling injury (pitting, off-flavour). At ambient summer temperature a thin-rinded type like Sugar Baby holds only a few days, a firm-rinded hybrid a week or more.
Packaging
Grade by size and check each fruit for cracks, blotch and soft spots. Load firm-rinded fruit in single or double layers with straw or padding between; do not stack thin-rinded types more than two deep.
Transportation
Move as soon as possible after harvest, cushioned against road shock. Internal cracking from rough transport is the main reason a good-looking load is rejected at the market.
Shelf life
3–7 days at ambient for thin-rinded types, up to 2–3 weeks at 10–15°C for firm-rinded hybrids. Cut watermelon must be refrigerated and used within a day or two.

Why is my watermelon pale and not sweet?
Usually too much water near harvest, sometimes with too little sun, a potassium shortage, or picking before full maturity. Cut irrigation off 7–12 days before harvest so the last stretch is dry, give a potassium top-dressing at fruit development, and check the maturity signs before cutting.
What is the worst pest of watermelon?
The melon fruit fly. The female stings young fruit to lay eggs and the maggots rot it from inside; losses of a third to a half are common where it is not managed. Use pheromone traps and protein-bait spots from flowering, collect and bury all stung and fallen fruit, and plough the field after harvest.
Can watermelon be grown without irrigation?
In the river-bed (diara) method it is grown with almost no applied water — the planting pit reaches moist sand and the deep taproot follows the falling water table through the season. A main-field crop on ordinary land needs regular irrigation, ideally drip, until the final ripening stretch.
Which watermelon variety should I grow?
Sugar Baby for a quick crop and nearby markets; Arka Manik where disease pressure is high and the fruit has to travel; Kiran or a proven private hybrid for large commercial fields; Durgapura Meetha for hot arid and river-bed conditions; Pusa Bedana for the premium seedless market (with a pollenizer row). Confirm the local recommendation with your KVK.
How do I know a watermelon is ripe without cutting it?
Check three things: the ground spot where the fruit rested on the soil has turned cream or yellow (not white), the curly tendril nearest the fruit stalk has dried and browned, and the fruit gives a dull hollow thump rather than a sharp ring when tapped.
Does watermelon have an MSP or a mandi price?
There is no MSP for watermelon. It trades widely on Agmarknet as "Water Melon", with heavy records through the March–June season from markets across the northern plains, the peninsula and the river-bed belts. Price is highest for the earliest fruit and falls fast at the seasonal peak.
