The melon fruit fly is the pest that matters most. The female stings young fruit to lay eggs, the maggots feed inside, and the fruit rots on the vine. It has to be managed from fruit set with traps and bait, not sprayed after damage shows. The red pumpkin beetle can destroy a seedling stand in days and needs watching from germination. Fusarium wilt builds up in the soil where watermelon or other cucurbits are grown too often, so rotation and a resistant variety matter.

Otherwise watermelon is an easy, fast crop — 75–100 days from sowing to first harvest, a light feeder, and a good fit for warm, sandy, free-draining land that many other crops find too poor.

Overview

Watermelon, or tarbooz (Citrullus lanatus), is a warm-season trailing vine grown for its large, sweet fruit. It is a summer crop, sown from November through March so that the fruit fills and ripens in the dry pre-monsoon heat of April to June. India grows it in two main ways: on river-bed (diara) sand along the Ganga, Yamuna, Gandak, Kosi and other rivers in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, using the residual moisture in the sand; and as a main-field crop on ridges or raised beds, now usually with drip irrigation and plastic mulch, across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan.

The crop needs heat, strong sunlight and a long dry ripening spell. Growth is best at 24–35°C; the vine is killed by frost and stalls in cool, cloudy weather. The single most weather-sensitive period is the last two or three weeks before harvest — hot, bright, rain-free conditions build the sugar and colour that fetch a price, while rain, cloud or heavy watering then produce a pale, watery, cracked, low-value fruit.

Two pests decide much of the outcome. The melon fruit fly stings young fruit to lay its eggs and the maggots rot the fruit from inside; it must be trapped and baited from fruit set. The red pumpkin beetle can strip a seedling stand within days of germination. Fusarium wilt, a soil-borne fungus, builds up wherever cucurbits are grown too often, so a 3–4 year rotation and a wilt-resistant variety such as Arka Manik are worth planning for.

Climate requirements

Everything about the crop calendar is aimed at ripening the fruit in hot, bright, rain-free weather — a melon that matures under cloud or in the first monsoon showers loses the sweetness the whole crop is grown for.

  • Ideal temperature

    A hot-season crop that grows best at 24–35°C, with plenty of bright sun. Below about 18°C the vine barely grows and fruit set and sugar are poor; frost kills it outright. Fruit ripening in genuine summer heat is what makes a sweet, dark-fleshed melon.

  • Rainfall

    Grown in the dry season on irrigation or river-bed moisture. Rain during flowering causes poor pollination and fruit drop; rain or high humidity during ripening causes cracking, low sugar, fungal fruit rot and a fruit that will not travel — which is why the crop is timed to finish before the monsoon.

  • Humidity

    Low humidity suits it. Humid, overcast spells bring on downy mildew, powdery mildew, anthracnose and gummy stem blight and spoil fruit quality.

  • Sunlight

    Full, strong sun. Watermelon shaded by weeds or a taller crop makes long vine and small, pale, low-sugar fruit.

Soil requirements

River-bed sand looks like poor land but is close to ideal for watermelon — it is warm, bottomless for the roots, drains instantly, and holds sub-surface moisture the deep taproot can reach all season.

  • Suitable soil

    Light, warm, deep, free-draining soil — sandy loam, loamy sand and river-bed alluvium are ideal because they warm up fast in spring, drain well, and let the taproot go deep to find moisture. Heavy clay stays cold and wet, delays the crop and rots the vine base.

  • pH range

    Best at pH 6.0–7.0; tolerates up to about 7.5. Strongly acid or saline soils cut yield and sugar.

  • Drainage

    Free drainage is essential; the vine base and roots rot quickly in wet soil. On heavier land the crop must be grown on ridges or raised beds.

  • Organic matter

    Moderate. A basal dose of well-rotted farmyard manure improves the light soils the crop favours, but watermelon is not a heavy feeder and too much nitrogen grows vine at the expense of fruit.

Land preparation

    Prepare pits or beds

    For the river-bed crop, dig planting pits about 60–75 cm across and 45 cm deep down to moist sand, spaced along the row. For the main-field crop, form ridges or raised beds 2–3 m apart, or channels for a spreading vine layout.

    Fill with manure and basal fertiliser

    Mix 4–5 kg well-rotted farmyard manure plus a handful of NPK and single super phosphate into each pit, or spread 15–20 t/ha of FYM across a main field before bed-forming.

    Lay drip and mulch (main-field crop)

    On beds, lay the drip line and, where used, plastic mulch before sowing — the mulch warms the soil, saves water, keeps the fruit clean and cuts weeding sharply.

Spacing

Seed treatment
Soak seed for 12–24 hours and, for a faster stand in cool early-season soil, sprout it in warm moist cloth before sowing. Treat with a fungicide such as thiram or carbendazim against damping-off, and with imidacloprid seed dressing to hold back the red pumpkin beetle at the seedling stage.

Sowing guide

A pre-germinated seed placed into warm, moist soil gets the seedling up and past the red-pumpkin-beetle window faster — a slow, cool-soil stand is the one that beetles thin out.

River-bed crop: November to January, as the flood water recedes, for harvest in March–May. Main-field crop: January to March in the plains, for harvest in April–June before the monsoon. Peninsular India also has a post-monsoon crop.

Method
Dibble 2–3 seeds per hill or pit, then thin to the 2 strongest seedlings after 12–15 days. In the river-bed method the seed goes into a pit dug down to moist sand so the crop can run largely on that stored moisture.

Fertilizer schedule

A split dose beats one large dose applied at sowing — nitrogen especially is lost to the air and to leaching if it all goes in on day one.

    15–20 t/ha FYM plus about one-third of the nitrogen and the full phosphorus and potassium — a common dose is 30–40 kg N, 50–60 kg P₂O₅ and 50–60 kg K₂O per hectare, placed near the pit or along the bed.

    Vine growth

    20–25 days after sowing

    About one-third of the nitrogen as the vine starts to run; on drip, this is split into weekly fertigation doses through the vegetative stage.

    The remaining nitrogen plus an extra dose of potassium (for example potassium sulphate or MOP, or foliar KNO₃) as fruits set and swell — potassium at this stage is what drives fruit size and sugar. Stop nitrogen once fruits are near full size.

    Day 0–20

    Light, frequent water to establish the seedlings; the river-bed crop draws on sub-surface sand moisture and is watered only if that runs short.

  2. 2. Vine growth and flowering

    Day 20–50

    Regular irrigation every 5–8 days (or steady drip) through vine growth and flowering; water stress now reduces the number of fruits set.

  3. 3. Fruit development to ripening

    Day 50 onward

    Keep water steady while fruits are swelling, then reduce it and stop 7–12 days before harvest. A dry finish concentrates the sugar; watering right up to harvest gives a bland, watery, split fruit.

Water-saving tips

  • Drip irrigation with plastic mulch is now standard on commercial watermelon — it cuts water use by a third or more, keeps the fruit clean and off wet soil, and lets fertiliser be spoon-fed through the season.
  • The river-bed pit method uses almost no applied water: the pit reaches moist sand and the deep taproot follows the falling water table down through the season.
  • The most valuable water decision is to stop early — the last 1–2 weeks should be dry, both to build sugar and to stop the fruit cracking.

Weed management

Organic control

  • Two hand-weedings before the vines cover the ground — at about 15–20 and 35 days — handle most of the weed pressure; once the vine mat closes it suppresses later weeds itself.
  • Straw or plastic mulch on the bed suppresses weeds, conserves moisture and keeps the developing fruit off damp soil where it would rot.
  • Pull out any wild or volunteer cucurbits nearby — they host the same fruit fly, mildews and viruses and keep the pressure on the crop high.

Chemical control

  • A pre-emergence herbicide cleared for cucurbits, applied to the bed before the vines run, controls early weeds; after that the crop is hand-weeded because the sprawling vine cannot be sprayed over.
  • Plastic mulch removes almost all in-row weeding; confirm any herbicide for the inter-row with your KVK.

Common mistakes to avoid

The mistakes that cost growers the most, ranked by how often they show up in the field — not in the order you might expect.

    Watering right up to harvest.

    Why it hurts

    Water in the last one to two weeks makes the fruit take up water fast — it comes out pale, watery, low in sugar and prone to splitting on the vine or in transit. A dry finish is what makes a sweet, saleable melon.

    Waiting for fruit-fly damage before acting.

    Why it hurts

    By the time stung fruit shows soft rot, the fly is well established and a large share of the crop is already lost. Traps, bait and sanitation have to start at flowering and fruit set, not after damage appears.

    Beetles can clear a newly emerged stand in a few days. Seed treatment plus a net or cloth cover until 4–5 true leaves is cheap insurance against having to re-sow.

Harvesting

Cut fruit at full maturity, 75–100 days after sowing depending on variety, using the maturity signs rather than a fixed date. Harvest in the cool of the morning and handle the fruit gently — a dropped or dropped-on melon cracks internally even if the rind looks fine.

  • The ground spot (where the fruit sat on the soil) has turned from white to cream or buttery yellow
  • The curly tendril nearest the fruit stalk has dried and browned
  • A dull, hollow thump when the fruit is tapped, not a sharp ring

Expected yield

Post-harvest & storage

  • Storage

    Watermelon does not ripen further after cutting, so it must be harvested ripe. Whole fruit keeps 2–3 weeks at 10–15°C and moderate humidity; below about 7°C it suffers chilling injury (pitting, off-flavour). At ambient summer temperature a thin-rinded type like Sugar Baby holds only a few days, a firm-rinded hybrid a week or more.

  • Packaging

    Grade by size and check each fruit for cracks, blotch and soft spots. Load firm-rinded fruit in single or double layers with straw or padding between; do not stack thin-rinded types more than two deep.

  • Transportation

    Move as soon as possible after harvest, cushioned against road shock. Internal cracking from rough transport is the main reason a good-looking load is rejected at the market.

  • Shelf life

    3–7 days at ambient for thin-rinded types, up to 2–3 weeks at 10–15°C for firm-rinded hybrids. Cut watermelon must be refrigerated and used within a day or two.
