Overview
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is one of India’s most profitable fruits and a genuine dryland crop — Maharashtra (Solapur, Sangola) is its heartland, with Karnataka, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh close behind. The Bhagwa variety, with its glossy red rind and soft, sweet arils, has driven a strong domestic and export trade.
It is drought-tolerant and thrives on light soils where little else fruits, but it is not a low-management crop. Everything is deliberate: the tree is forced to flower in one chosen season (bahar) by withholding water, the crop is thinned and often bagged, and the fruit is graded hard for export.

Bacterial blight (telya / oily spot)
- Symptoms
- Water-soaked, oily, dark spots on leaves that later crack, and greasy black cracked lesions on the fruit; severe attack causes defoliation and unsellable, cracked fruit.
- Cause
- The bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae, spread by rain-splash, wind and infected material, and driven by humid, wet weather.
- Treatment
- Prune out and destroy affected wood, and follow a strict copper + antibiotic spray schedule under expert advice; badly hit crops may be sacrificed.
- Prevention
- Choose a dry bahar so fruiting misses the rains, use clean planting material, rigorous sanitation, resistant-window timing and preventive sprays — this is the crop’s defining, reputation-making disease.
Wilt (Ceratocystis / Fusarium)
- Symptoms
- Yellowing and wilting of one side or the whole plant, with vascular browning and root/collar decay; the plant declines and dies.

- Soil-borne fungi (and nematode interaction), worst on waterlogged or repeatedly-cropped soils.

- Identification
- Caterpillars of the pomegranate butterfly boring into the fruit through the calyx, leaving a bored, frass-filled, rotting fruit.
- Damage
- The number-one fruit pest — a single borer ruins the fruit from inside, and it is invisible until cut, so it barely shows before harvest.
- Organic control
- Bag the fruit early (the most effective single measure), remove and destroy bored fruit, and use pheromone/light traps for the adults.
- Chemical control
- Well-timed recommended sprays at flowering and early fruit set, before the larvae bore in; bagging reduces the need.
Sucking pests (thrips, whitefly, mealybug, aphids)
- Identification
