What causes ergot in bajra, and is it dangerous?
Ergot is caused by a fungus that infects the crop in cool, humid weather right at flowering, leaving a sticky exudate on earheads followed by hard, dark sclerotia among the grains. Those sclerotia are toxic, so hand-sort or use salt-water flotation to remove them from harvested grain before it is consumed or sold.
Is bajra really suitable for very poor, sandy soil?
Yes — more so than any other major Indian cereal; it is specifically the crop grown on land too light and low-fertility for wheat, rice or maize. The one exception is drainage: despite its drought tolerance, bajra still does not stand waterlogging after a heavy shower.
How is bajra different from jowar (sorghum) as a crop to grow?
Bajra tolerates lighter, sandier soil and less rainfall than jowar, and matures faster (75–90 days against jowar’s 100–120), making it the better choice on the driest, poorest land. Jowar, grown in both kharif and rabi seasons, suits slightly better soil and rainfall and offers a rabi option bajra does not.
