Overview

Rusts are a group of fungal diseases named for the rust-coloured, powdery spores they produce. They erupt as raised pustules on the leaves, leaf sheaths and stems; when you rub them, they leave a yellow, orange, brown or black powdery stain on your hand. The pustules break the leaf surface, so the plant loses water and food, the leaves yellow and dry, and grain or pods fill poorly and shrivel.

Wheat is the classic host, with three rusts — yellow (stripe) rust, brown (leaf) rust and black (stem) rust — and barley shares them; rusts also hit pearl millet, groundnut, pea and soybean, among others. Rust spores are carried long distances on the wind, and the fungus evolves new races that overcome resistant varieties, which is why rust management centres on growing currently-resistant varieties, timely sowing, and monitoring, backed by fungicides when needed.

How to identify it

  • Raised, powdery pustules on the leaves, sheaths and stems that shed spores staining your hand yellow, orange, brown or black.
  • Yellow (stripe) rust: yellow pustules in stripes along the leaf veins, in cool, moist weather.
  • Brown (leaf) rust: scattered orange-brown pustules on the leaf blade; black (stem) rust: dark, elongated pustules on the stem and sheath that rupture the surface.
  • Leaves that yellow and dry early, and grain or pods that fill poorly and shrivel under a heavy attack.

What causes it and when

  • Rust fungi (Puccinia and relatives), whose spores blow long distances on the wind and infect through leaf wetness/dew.
  • Yellow rust favours cool, moist weather; brown and black rusts favour warmer, humid conditions — so which rust appears depends on the season and zone.
  • The fungus evolves new races that can overcome a previously-resistant variety, so a variety’s resistance can erode over years.
  • Late-sown, lush, dense crops and susceptible varieties are hit hardest.

Cultural & organic control

  • Grow currently-recommended rust-resistant varieties — the single most important and economical control — and change variety as local resistance erodes.
  • Sow at the recommended time (timely-sown crops escape the worst) and avoid excess nitrogen and over-dense stands.
  • Monitor the crop from tillering onward, especially in rust-favourable weather, and heed regional rust advisories.
  • Remove volunteer plants and grassy hosts that carry rust between seasons.

Chemical control

  • Spray at the first appearance of pustules — early control protects the upper leaves that fill the grain; a delayed spray saves much less.
  • CIB&RC-registered fungicides for rust on the crop (e.g. propiconazole and other triazoles) are effective; rotate to avoid resistance and repeat if pressure continues.
  • Cover the leaves and stems well, and observe the pre-harvest interval.
  • Confirm the current recommendation and the resistant varieties for your area with your local KVK or the wheat/crop research institute.

Prevent it coming back

  • Keep switching to the latest resistant varieties as rust races change — resistance is a moving target.
  • Sow on time, manage nitrogen and density, and remove volunteers and alternate hosts.
  • Watch regional rust surveillance advisories and be ready to spray early in a rust-favourable season.
