Government production notes are explicit that Ashwagandha is meant to be grown mainly on the residual fertility left behind by a previous, well-manured crop, not fed fresh manure or fertiliser in its own right. This is part of why it is often planted on marginal, non-irrigated land rather than a farm's best field — it is a deliberately low-input crop by design, not an oversight.
Should I direct-sow or raise a nursery and transplant?
Direct sowing (broadcasting seed into the field around the second week of July) is cheaper and lower-labour, and is what most growers use — but it needs a firm hand-thinning at 25–30 days to bring the stand down to about 20,000–25,000 plants/ha. Transplanting nursery-raised seedlings at 5–6 weeks old into 60×60 cm spacing gives a more even, controlled stand from the start, at the cost of raising and moving a nursery.
Which variety should I plant?
JA-20 and JA-134, both released by JNKVV, Mandsaur, are the two Ashwagandha varieties on ICAR-DMAPR's own official released-varieties list. CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow, has since released several higher-yielding lines: CIMAP-Pratap (34.95 quintals/ha dry root in its registration trial, bred for drought-prone areas), CIM-Pushti (9–10 quintals/ha, leaf-blight tolerant, released 2018), CIMAP-Chetak (bred from Nagori stock for medium-irrigated land) and Poshita (~14 quintals/ha in multi-year trials). That said, much of the crop actually traded in India — including Rajasthan's well-known "Nagori" strain — is still grown from farm-saved or locally-traded seed rather than a formally released variety.
When and how do I harvest Ashwagandha?
Harvest January to March, 150–180 days after sowing, once the leaves have dried and the berries have turned from green to yellow-red. Uproot the whole plant, cut the stem 1–2 cm above the crown, cut the roots into 7–10 cm pieces, and sun-dry them. Berries are hand-plucked or threshed separately to recover the seed.
What are the main pest and disease risks?
Government cultivation notes name stem borer and mites as the main insect pests, and seedling blight/damping-off and Alternaria leaf blight as the main diseases — but by far the biggest risk to the crop is waterlogging, which causes root and collar rot at any stage and is the reason Ashwagandha is grown on well-drained land with irrigation kept to a genuine minimum.
