Overview
Brinjal (Solanum melongena), also called eggplant or aubergine, is one of India’s most widely grown and dependable vegetables — cultivated in every state, in the plains and the hills, across kharif, rabi and summer.
Its great advantage is that a single planting keeps yielding over many pickings for four to six months, spreading both the harvest and the income. That same long field life, though, is what makes the shoot-and-fruit borer such a serious pest — it has months of fruit to tunnel into, and every bored fruit is unsaleable.
