- Silken webbing mixed with frass and bark fragments over a tunnel entrance on the trunk or main branches, with a caterpillar tunnelling inside.
- Damage
- Weakens the tree's structure over time by tunnelling through the trunk and branches, and can trigger dieback in the affected limb; a long-term threat given how many years the same tree stays productive.

- Scrape away the webbing, probe and destroy the caterpillar inside the tunnel with a wire, and seal the cleaned hole with mud or a wound-sealant paste.

This is completely normal — amla is a deciduous tree that sheds its leaves in the dry pre-summer period and puts out a fresh flush with the new season's flowering. It is not a sign of disease or poor health unless the leaf loss happens well outside this normal cycle or is accompanied by dieback.
Which amla variety should I plant?
It depends on your goal. NA-6 and Kanchan suit candy, preserve and pickle-making with their lower fibre and smaller fruit; Krishna and Banarasi are good early-season, general-purpose choices; Chakaiya is the toughest, longest-storing option, valued for shredding and pickles even though the fruit is more fibrous; NA-7 is a widely planted, heavy-bearing all-rounder; and BSR-1 is the standard high-yielding choice for Tamil Nadu conditions.
What is the biggest disease risk with amla, and how do I manage it?
Rust is the main disease risk, appearing as orange-brown pustules on leaves and fruit from around August and peaking in the cooler months. A protective fungicide spray (mancozeb, copper oxychloride or wettable sulphur) at first sign, combined with an open, well-pruned canopy for airflow, keeps it manageable.
Why is amla valued for more than just eating fresh?
The fruit carries one of the highest vitamin C contents of any commonly grown fruit, and its firm, low-moisture flesh holds up well through processing. A large share of the commercial crop goes into murabba (a whole-fruit sugar preserve), candy, dried churna powder, juice, and as an ingredient in traditional Ayurvedic preparations such as chyawanprash — which is part of why demand and processing infrastructure for amla are well established in its main growing tracts.
Does amla have an MSP or a mandi price?
There is no MSP for amla. It trades on Agmarknet under the commodity name "Amla(Nelli Kai)", with genuine daily price and arrival records from markets in producing states including Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
