Overview

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) covers roughly 5 million hectares in India, the world’s second-largest cane area after Brazil, concentrated in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Unlike wheat or rice, it is not sold in the open mandi — every stick goes to a sugar mill, or a local gur/khandsari unit, at a price fixed for the season.

The crop is also unusual in how long it stays in the ground and how many times it pays out from one planting. A field is typically replanted only every three to four years — the plant crop is harvested once, then the stubble is nursed back into a ratoon crop for one or two more cycles at a fraction of the cost, before diminishing returns finally justify tearing it out and starting over.

Climate requirements

Sugarcane has no true dormant season in most of India — it is planted, grown and harvested on a calendar built around the sugar mill’s crushing season (roughly November to April), not around cool or wet weather the way wheat and rice are.

Fertilizer schedule

    Sugarcane is not a storage crop — cut cane loses sucrose by respiration from the moment it is harvested, so there is no “storage” step in the usual sense; the only lever a grower has is minimising the gap between cutting and crushing.

  • Packaging

    Cane is hauled loose by tractor-trolley, bullock cart or truck directly to the mill or local gur/khandsari unit — there is no bagging or grading step comparable to a grain crop.

  • Transportation

    Crush within 24 hours of cutting wherever possible — sucrose loss accelerates sharply after that, and a queue at the mill gate during peak crushing season is the single most common cause of a grower’s cane going stale before it is even weighed.

  • Shelf life
