It is eaten as a cooked vegetable while young and tender, and — once fully mature — processed into petha, the candied sweet, or stored whole for months as a genuinely long-keeping vegetable.
It is grown widely across India: Uttar Pradesh (especially around Agra, for the petha industry), Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, the north-eastern hill states, Odisha, Kerala and Tamil Nadu all grow it commercially, in a summer crop sown January–March and a rainy-season crop sown June–July, similar to the sowing windows of bottle gourd and bitter gourd.
What sets ash gourd apart from every other gourd is the thick, chalky wax coating that develops on its skin as the fruit reaches full maturity. - Fungi in the Podosphaera/Erysiphe group, spread by wind-borne spores and not needing free water.

Anthracnose

Mosaic virus
- Symptoms
- Mottled light-and-dark green, puckered, distorted young leaves and small, blotchy, misshapen fruit that cannot be sold or stored.
- Cause
- Aphid-borne cucurbit mosaic viruses, spread within minutes of an aphid probing a leaf.
- Treatment
- No cure. Rogue out infected plants early before aphids spread the virus further.
- Prevention
- Clean seed, early aphid control, removal of weed hosts, and a reflective mulch to deter aphids.

Melon fruit fly
- Identification
- Brownish flies larger than a housefly around the vines; young fruit with tiny sting marks and oozing spots that go soft and drop, with white maggots and a foul rot inside when cut.

- A serious pest on young, tender fruit before the rind hardens; once the rind has fully hardened and the wax coat has set, mature fruit is considerably more resistant to stings.
- Organic control
- Cue-lure or pheromone traps from first flowering; a protein-bait splash on the leaves; picking and destroying stung and fallen fruit daily.

Red pumpkin beetle

- Small bright orange-red beetles on the seedlings that fly off when disturbed; round holes bitten in the cotyledons and young leaves; whitish grubs in the soil damage roots.

- The main pest of the seedling stage — a swarm can destroy the stand at the early-leaf stage and force a resowing.

Should I pick ash gourd young like bottle gourd, or let it mature fully?
It depends on the use. For the fresh-vegetable market, cut it somewhat earlier — around 65–90 days — while still tender enough to cook. But if the fruit is meant for long storage or for making petha, leave it on the vine until full maturity (roughly 120–150 days), by which point the rind has hardened and the wax coating has fully formed. Cutting it early for these uses forfeits both the storage life and the firm texture petha-making needs.
What is petha made from, and why does it need ash gourd specifically?
Petha is a translucent candied sweet, particularly associated with Agra, made by cooking chunks of mature ash gourd in sugar syrup. Ash gourd is used because its firm, low-moisture flesh holds its shape through the syrup-cooking process rather than turning mushy, which most other gourds would do.
Why is my ash gourd vine growing well but not fruiting much?
Check for adequate pollination — like other cucurbits, ash gourd needs insect activity to move pollen from male to female flowers, so heavy pesticide use during flowering can hurt bee visits. Also check nitrogen levels: excess nitrogen pushes leafy growth at the expense of flowering. Given how long this crop stays in the field, sustaining a balanced fertiliser programme through the whole season matters more than for a quicker gourd.
How much space does ash gourd need?
More than most gourds, both because the vine is vigorous and because the mature fruit is very heavy — commonly 3 kg to over 10 kg depending on variety. Space hills roughly 2 m between rows and 1–1.5 m within the row, and build any bower strong enough to carry the full weight of a mature crop.
Does ash gourd have an MSP or a mandi price?
There is no MSP for ash gourd. It trades on Agmarknet under the commodity name "Ashgourd", with genuine daily price and arrival records from markets in producing states including Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
