Climate requirements

Because the fruit is deliberately left on the vine far longer than other gourds when grown for storage, protecting the ripening fruit from direct soil contact (a mat or straw layer underneath) matters more here than for a quickly-picked crop.

  • Ideal temperature

    A hot-weather crop, best at 24–30°C. It grows poorly and germinates slowly below about 18°C, so the summer crop waits until the worst of the cold has passed. It has no frost tolerance.

  • Rainfall

    The rainy-season crop runs largely on the monsoon but cannot stand waterlogging; the summer crop is grown entirely on irrigation.

    A deep, well-drained sandy loam to loam rich in organic matter suits ash gourd well. It tolerates a range of soils but does badly on heavy, waterlogging clay, especially given how long the crop stays in the ground.

Organic control

  • Hand-weeding in the first six to eight weeks, before the vine covers the ground or bower.
  • A straw or plastic mulch suppresses weeds, saves water and — importantly for this crop — keeps fruit clean and off wet soil through its long time on the vine.
