Moringa (Moringa oleifera), known across India as drumstick or sahjan, is one of the lowest-input crops a farmer can plant — a hardy, fast-growing tree that tolerates poor soil, heat and long dry spells, and needs very little fertiliser once established. Its one real weakness is the opposite of drought: the taproot cannot survive standing water, and waterlogging rots it quickly.
What sets moringa apart from most crops on this site is that it earns from two different products off the same plant. Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a fast-growing tree of the Moringaceae family, grown across India as drumstick for its pods and, increasingly, as a leaf crop for moringa powder. It is unusually tolerant of poor soil, heat and drought once established, and needs far less fertiliser and spray protection than most vegetable or spice crops on this site.
Two things decide how a moringa block is run: spacing and pruning. Wider spacing (2.5 m × 2.5 m or more) with fewer, taller trees suits pod production and a long tree life — the traditional Coimbatore types (CO 1, CO 2) are grown this way and can keep bearing for eight to ten years. Closer spacing (down to about 1.2 m × 1.2 m) with hard, regular pruning suits the annual, high-density system used with PKM 1, PKM 2, Dhanraj and Bhagya, and is also the system that makes sense for leaf and powder production, since pruning is exactly what keeps pushing out the tender new leafy growth the powder trade wants.
The pod side of the business sells into the ordinary vegetable mandi system, with no Minimum Support Price. The leaf-powder side is a separate, higher-value opportunity: India already accounts for the large majority of the world's moringa production, and demand for moringa leaf powder — as a nutrition supplement, a food ingredient and, increasingly, an export commodity — has been growing steadily. A farmer does not have to choose one over the other permanently; many run pods as the main crop and sell surplus leaf as powder on the side, or the reverse.

Direct-seeded at site (moringa dislikes transplant shock to its taproot) or transplanted from 30–45-day-old nursery bags at the start of the monsoon or under irrigation in February–March.

Site selection and drainage matter more here than rainfall totals.

Choose the site for its drainage first, its soil type second. Moringa will grow in almost any well-drained soil, including poor and marginal land, but no soil quality compensates for a field that holds water after rain or irrigation — that is the one condition this tree cannot forgive.
Suitable soil
Well-drained sandy loam to loam is ideal; the tree also grows in poorer, stony or marginal soils that would not support most other crops, provided drainage is good

6.5–7.5, though the tree tolerates mildly alkaline soils up to about pH 8.5

Excellent drainage is non-negotiable — this is the single most important soil condition for moringa, more important than fertility or texture

Refill each pit with the excavated topsoil mixed with well-rotted farmyard manure (about 5–10 kg per pit) and a small basal dose of single super phosphate.
Walk the field after a heavy irrigation or rain before planting — any spot that holds water for more than a few hours needs a raised mound or a drainage channel before a single tree goes in.

Whichever spacing you choose, mark it out for the product you actually intend to sell — wide spacing cannot easily be converted to a high-density leaf block later, and close spacing left unpruned quickly becomes an overcrowded, shaded, low-yielding tangle.
A split dose beats one large dose applied at sowing — nitrogen especially is lost to the air and to leaching if it all goes in on day one.
At planting
Well-rotted farmyard manure (5–10 kg per pit) mixed into the backfill, plus a small basal dose of single super phosphate to support early root growth.
About 2–3 months after planting
A light dose of urea and potash to support the vegetative growth that the first pinching will then branch out.
Twice a year — after each major pruning or harvest cycle
A modest, split N:P:K application (moringa is a low feeder compared with most crops) plus a fresh top-up of farmyard manure or compost around the root zone.
At flowering, and again during pod development
A dilute boron spray (commonly borax at around 0.2–0.3%) corrects the flower- and young-pod-drop that is moringa's single biggest yield leak, especially on soils that test short of boron.
First 2–3 months
Regular light watering (roughly weekly, more often in hot, dry weather) until the taproot is well established — this is the stage most sensitive to both drought stress and, in the opposite direction, waterlogging.
Months 3–6
Irrigation can be reduced once the tree is established; moringa's drought tolerance means this stage needs far less water than most vegetable crops.
From first flowering onward
A light, steady water supply here reduces flower and pod drop and improves pod size — moisture stress at this stage is the main irrigation-related yield risk.

Storage
Fresh pods have a short shelf life — a few days at room temperature, longer under refrigeration — and are best moved to market quickly rather than held on-farm. Leaves for powder must be processed, not stored fresh: spread them thin in a single layer and shade-dry within hours of cutting, away from direct sun, dust and moisture, until they crumble dry to the touch. Sun-drying is the single most common mistake here — it bleaches the leaf and destroys much of the colour and nutrient value that makes the powder worth a premium.
Packaging
Fresh pods go to market loose or in ventilated crates, not sealed bags, so they do not sweat and spoil faster. Dried leaves are ground into a fine powder, sieved to an even texture, and packed immediately into airtight, light-blocking containers or food-grade pouches — an open or clear container lets both light and moisture back in and steadily degrades a finished batch.
Transportation
Move fresh pods to market quickly and out of direct sun; move finished leaf powder in sealed, moisture-proof packaging, since it readily absorbs ambient moisture and clumps or loses shelf life if exposed.
Shelf life
Fresh pods: a few days unrefrigerated, somewhat longer chilled. Properly shade-dried, finely ground and airtight-packed leaf powder: commonly 6–12 months in a cool, dark, dry store before colour and nutrient value noticeably decline.
