Overview
Helicoverpa armigera is the same caterpillar behind the gram pod borer, the tomato and chilli fruit borer, the American bollworm of cotton and the sunflower head borer — a single, highly polyphagous pest with a different name on every crop. The moth lays eggs singly on flowers and tender growth; the caterpillar feeds briefly on leaves, then bores straight into the reproductive part.
That is what makes it so damaging: it attacks the pod, fruit, boll or flower head — the harvested product itself — and a single caterpillar will move from one pod or fruit to the next, damaging several. It also develops insecticide resistance quickly, which is why it is the classic case for integrated pest management: pheromone-trap monitoring, biological agents (HaNPV, Bt), and rotated insecticides used only on threshold, rather than routine cover sprays.
How to identify it
- Plump caterpillars up to ~4 cm, colour varying from green to brown with pale lengthwise stripes and dark bumps; they curl up when touched.
- Round bore holes in pods, fruit, bolls and flower heads, often with pellet-like droppings around the hole.
- A classic sign in chickpea/pigeonpea is the caterpillar with its head thrust inside a pod and the rest of the body hanging outside.
- Pheromone traps catching the buff/brown moths signal egg-laying is starting.
The damage it does
- Bored, hollowed and rotting pods, fruit, bolls and heads — direct loss of the harvested product.
- One caterpillar damages several pods/fruits as it moves along, so even modest numbers cause heavy loss.
- Secondary rot enters through the bore holes, spoiling more of the produce.
- Fast insecticide resistance, so repeated single-product spraying stops working and worsens the problem.
When to act
- Put up pheromone traps at flowering to time egg-laying, and scout flowers/young pods twice a week counting small caterpillars and eggs.
- Act at the egg/young-caterpillar stage — once a caterpillar is inside a pod or fruit, no spray reaches it.
- Use the crop’s economic threshold (e.g. commonly around 1–2 larvae per plant in chickpea/pigeonpea, or eggs/larvae per plant in tomato) rather than spraying on a calendar.
Organic & cultural control
- Install pheromone traps for monitoring and mass-trapping, and put up bird perches — birds take a lot of exposed caterpillars in pulses.
- Spray HaNPV (the Helicoverpa nuclear polyhedrosis virus) or Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) against young caterpillars — both are specific and safe for natural enemies.
- Use neem (NSKE 5%) as an egg-laying deterrent and grow a trap crop (e.g. marigold in tomato) to concentrate egg-laying for easier control.
- Deep-plough after harvest to expose the soil pupae, and rotate crops to break the cycle.
Chemical control
- Spray only on threshold and target young caterpillars before they bore in; rotate insecticide groups strictly to slow resistance.
- CIB&RC-registered options include emamectin benzoate 5% SG, chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC, flubendiamide 39.35% SC and spinosad 45% SC — chosen for your crop.
- Avoid repeated use of synthetic pyrethroids alone, to which Helicoverpa has developed strong resistance in many areas.

Frequently asked questions
Is the gram pod borer the same as the tomato fruit borer and cotton bollworm?
Yes — they are all the same insect, Helicoverpa armigera, just named after the crop it is on. It bores into chickpea and pigeonpea pods, tomato and chilli fruit, cotton bolls and sunflower heads. Because it is one pest, the same IPM approach — traps, HaNPV/Bt, threshold-based rotated sprays — works across all of them.
Why do my usual sprays not control the pod borer anymore?
Helicoverpa develops insecticide resistance quickly, and in many areas it is strongly resistant to the pyrethroids that once worked. Spray only on threshold, target young caterpillars before they bore into pods or fruit, rotate between different insecticide groups, and lean on HaNPV/Bt and pheromone traps so no single chemical carries the whole load.
The caterpillar is already inside the pods — will spraying help?
Not much — once it is inside a pod or fruit it is protected from sprays. That is why timing is everything: monitor with pheromone traps, and treat at the egg and young-caterpillar stage while they are still feeding on the outside. HaNPV, Bt or a registered insecticide then, plus removing bored pods/fruit, is far more effective than spraying late.
