About this variety

Bhagya (KDM-01) was released by the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, Karnataka, in 2012, from a selection derived from PKM 3 breeding material studied since 1998. It has a spreading growth habit and is specifically suited to high-density planting, where it is kept compact — about 2–4 m tall — through regular pruning rather than left to grow into a tall tree. This combination of compact size and a spreading habit makes it a natural fit for blocks that harvest both pods and leaf, since the same pruning that controls its height also keeps producing the tender new growth that leaf-powder production depends on. Comparative variety trials have reported its pods running higher in ascorbic acid, phosphorus and magnesium than several other cultivars.

Sowing & cultivation

  • Sowing timeJune–July (monsoon, rainfed) or February–March (irrigated)
  • Seed rateAbout 2–3 kg/ha for direct seeding at standard spacing, more for a close, high-density planting
  • SpacingSuited to close, high-density planting given its compact, spreading habit; check current UHS Bagalkot guidance for the recommended density
  • Sowing methodDirect seeding at the final site is preferred over transplanting
  • IrrigationRegular light watering through establishment; a close-spaced block benefits from drip irrigation
  • FertilizerThe zone-standard low dose for moringa, with total per-hectare fertiliser rising somewhat under close spacing
  • HarvestingShort-duration and high-yielding; well suited to a combined pod-and-leaf harvest schedule under regular pruning rather than a pods-only regime

Soil & climate

Soil

Suitable soil
Well-drained sandy loam to loam
Irrigation
Excellent drainage is essential, as for every moringa variety

Climate

Climate
Well suited to Karnataka's warm, dry moringa tracts

Yield & maturity

Maturity period

Short-duration, high-yielding; annual cropping

Expected yield

Short-duration, high-yielding, with pods reported higher in ascorbic acid, phosphorus and magnesium than several other cultivars in comparative trials

Actual yield depends on sowing time, soil, irrigation, weather, seed quality and crop management.

Pest & disease considerations

Management notes

  • Lean into regular, hard pruning rather than letting the tree grow tall — this variety's whole advantage is a compact, high-density, dual pod-and-leaf system.
  • Where leaf is harvested for powder alongside pods, cut leafy branches on their own cycle rather than only when pods are picked.
