Overview

Bathua (Chenopodium album, lambsquarters) is the most common and important broadleaf weed of winter (rabi) crops such as wheat, gram, mustard and potato across the plains. It is a fast-growing annual with soft, somewhat diamond- to triangular-shaped leaves that carry a characteristic mealy, greyish-white powdery bloom, especially on the young leaves and growing tips, and a ridged, often reddish-streaked stem. Familiar as an edible leafy green, in the crop it is nonetheless a major weed.

Its importance comes from fast early growth that competes strongly with the crop for nitrogen, water, light and space, and above all from the enormous number of seeds a single plant produces, which build a large, long-lived soil seed bank. It germinates mainly from that surface seed bank in the cooler season. Management combines clean seed, early inter-cultivation and a competitive crop, timely broadleaf herbicides, and preventing seed set to run down the seed bank.

How to identify it

  • A fast-growing annual with soft, diamond- to triangular-shaped leaves.
  • A characteristic mealy, greyish-white powdery bloom on the young leaves and growing tips.
  • A ridged stem, often with reddish streaks, and dense clusters of tiny green flowers/seeds later.

Cultural & preventive control

  • Use clean, weed-seed-free crop seed and a competitive, well-fertilised, properly-spaced crop that shades the ground.
  • Inter-cultivate/hoe early to remove bathua while the crop is young, before it competes and seeds.
  • Prevent seed set — remove escapes before they seed to run down the huge seed bank.
  • Keep field edges and bunds clean, and use mulch in wide-row crops where practical.

Herbicide control

  • Use recommended post-emergence broadleaf herbicides for the crop (e.g. 2,4-D or metsulfuron in wheat) at the correct early stage and dose.
  • In pre-emergence, products like pendimethalin/isoproturon combinations (as recommended for the crop) reduce early bathua.
  • Never tank-mix incompatible products (e.g. 2,4-D with a grass herbicide like clodinafop) and follow label timing.
  • Confirm the current recommended broadleaf herbicide for your crop with your local KVK.

Integrated management

  • Combine clean seed, a competitive crop, early inter-cultivation and timely broadleaf herbicides.
