Overview

Phalaris minor (littleseed canarygrass, "gehunsa" or "mandusi") is the most important weed of wheat in the north-western Indo-Gangetic plains. It is an annual grass that germinates with the wheat and closely resembles young wheat seedlings, so it is easily missed in the early weeks — the very time weed control matters most. Left unchecked, a heavy Phalaris stand can cut wheat yield drastically by competing for nitrogen, water, light and space.

Its biggest management challenge is herbicide resistance: because of repeated use of the same herbicides in continuous rice–wheat systems, Phalaris minor has evolved resistance to several once-effective products in many areas. That is why control cannot rely on one spray. The durable approach combines crop rotation (a non-cereal like mustard or gram breaks its cycle), rotating herbicide groups, timely sowing and good agronomy, and not letting it set seed.

How to identify it

  • An annual grass that germinates with the wheat and closely resembles young wheat in the early weeks.
  • Distinguished on close look by a more spreading habit, a purplish leaf base and, later, a spike-like seed head unlike the wheat ear.
  • Grows in dense stands within the wheat, hardest to tell apart exactly when early control matters most.
  • Worst in continuous rice–wheat fields in the north-west plains.

  • Competes fiercely with wheat for nitrogen, water, light and space, cutting yield heavily in a dense stand.

Cultural & preventive control

  • Sow on time with clean, weed-seed-free seed, and use competitive agronomy (proper seed rate, spacing, healthy vigorous crop).
  • Do not let Phalaris set seed — remove escapes before seeding to run down the soil seed bank.
  • Manage residue and irrigation so the crop, not the weed, gets the early advantage.

Herbicide control

  • Use post-emergence grass herbicides recommended for Phalaris in wheat (e.g. clodinafop, sulfosulfuron, pinoxaden, or a recommended combination) at the correct early stage and dose.
  • ROTATE herbicide groups season to season — repeating the same one drives resistance, the main reason control fails.
  • Never tank-mix incompatible products (e.g. clodinafop with 2,4-D) and follow label timing and water volume.

Integrated management
