Overview
The brinjal shoot and fruit borer is the single most damaging pest of brinjal (eggplant) in India, and the reason the crop is so heavily sprayed. The moth lays eggs on tender parts; the young caterpillar bores into the growing shoots first, killing the tip so it wilts and droops ("dead heart" of the shoot).
Once the crop is fruiting, the caterpillar bores into the fruit and tunnels the flesh, plugging the entry hole with frass. The fruit looks sound from outside but is bored, discoloured and often maggot-fouled inside, making it unsaleable. Because the caterpillar is hidden inside shoots and fruit, control depends on pheromone-trap monitoring, removing bored shoots and fruit, and timing treatment to the young larvae — not routine cover spraying.
How to identify it
- Tender shoot tips that suddenly wilt and droop, with a bore hole and frass where the caterpillar entered.
- Bore holes plugged with frass on the fruit; cut it open and you find a pinkish caterpillar and tunnelled, discoloured flesh.

When to act
- Set pheromone traps from early growth to monitor and mass-trap the moths, and scout for wilting shoots.
- Remove bored shoots and fruit at every picking — this continuous sanitation is the backbone of control.
- Act against young larvae; once inside a shoot or fruit no spray reaches them, so timing and sanitation matter more than spraying.
Organic & cultural control
- Clip and destroy wilting bored shoots and pick and destroy bored fruit regularly — removing the hidden larvae is the most effective single measure.
- Use pheromone traps for mass-trapping (several per acre) and grow resistant/tolerant varieties where available.
- Release Trichogramma egg parasitoids, spray neem (NSKE 5%), and conserve natural enemies by avoiding excessive broad-spectrum sprays.
- Rotate away from brinjal/solanaceous crops and destroy crop residues after the season.
Chemical control
- Spray on threshold from trap catches, targeting young larvae before they bore in — CIB&RC-registered options include chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide, emamectin benzoate and spinosad, rotated by group.
- Combine any spray with strict removal of bored shoots and fruit; spraying alone, without sanitation, gives poor control.
- Observe the pre-harvest interval strictly — brinjal is picked frequently and eaten directly, so residue management is critical.
