Sugar Baby

The most widely grown open-pollinated watermelon in India — small, round, very dark green, thin-rinded fruit of 3–5 kg with deep red, sweet, crisp flesh. Early and reliable, but the thin rind bruises and does not travel far, so it suits nearer markets.

About this variety

Sugar Baby is an old, open-pollinated "icebox" watermelon and by far the most widely grown open-pollinated type in India. The fruit is small and round (3–5 kg), with a very dark green, thin rind and deep red, sweet, crisp flesh. It is early — first harvest at about 85–95 days — and reliable across a wide range of conditions, which is why it remains the default for smallholders and the river-bed crop. The thin rind is its main limitation: the fruit bruises easily and does not stand long-distance transport, so it is best sold in nearby and regional markets.

Pest & disease considerations

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Early and reliable across a wide range of conditions
  • Deep red, sweet, crisp flesh in a small, single-family fruit size
  • Open-pollinated, so seed can be saved
  • Cheap seed compared with hybrids

Things to consider

  • Thin rind bruises and cracks in transit — for nearby markets only
  • No disease resistance — Fusarium wilt and the mildews need managing, and it should not follow cucurbits on the same land
