Kiran is a high-yielding F1 hybrid watermelon widely grown as the standard "big melon" commercial type across the northern plains, the Deccan and the west. The fruit is large and oval (10–12 kg), with deep pink-red firm flesh, high sugar and a tough, clearly striped rind that is bred to survive stacking and long road transport. It matures at about 90–95 days and is the mainstay of large commercial fields aimed at distant urban markets. As a hybrid, its seed must be bought fresh each year.
