About this variety
Royal Delicious is a natural colour mutation (sport) of Red Delicious that develops a deeper, more uniform red blush over a larger area of the fruit's surface than the original. This colour advantage is commercially significant in India, where darker-red apples command a premium in wholesale markets, and it has made Royal Delicious the single most planted variety in Kashmir's commercial orchards today — effectively replacing the original Red Delicious in new plantings while retaining the same genetics, tree form, rootstock compatibility and scab susceptibility. The fruit shape, size, flesh texture and flavour are indistinguishable from Red Delicious, so it carries the same limitations: mild, sweet, low-acid flesh that does not store as long as harder varieties; complete susceptibility to apple scab requiring the full spray programme; and self-incompatibility requiring a pollinizer variety.

Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Better red-colour development than the original Red Delicious — a direct premium advantage in Indian wholesale markets.
- Genetically identical management and rootstock compatibility, so it slots into existing Red Delicious orchards seamlessly.
Things to consider
- Carries the same complete scab susceptibility as Red Delicious — no spray reduction.
- Self-incompatible — needs a pollinizer variety and bee activity for fruit set.
Suitable regions
A higher-colour sport of Red Delicious that has become the standard commercial variety in Kashmir, dominant in Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag, Baramulla and Kupwara districts.
- Jammu and Kashmir
Frequently asked questions
Why has Royal Delicious replaced Red Delicious in new plantings?
The only practical difference is colour — Royal develops a deeper, more uniform red blush, which commands a higher price in Indian markets. Management, rootstock, spray programme and everything else are identical.
