About this variety
Firdous is the most important scab-resistant apple variety released in India. Developed and released by SKUAST-Kashmir in 1996, it carries the Vf gene for resistance to apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), the single most economically damaging disease in Indian apple production. This resistance means that orchards planted to Firdous can drastically reduce — though not entirely eliminate — fungicide sprays, cutting costs, chemical load and environmental impact. The fruit is medium-large with a red blush, good eating quality and acceptable storage life. Despite its clear advantage, adoption has been slow because commercial orchards are heavily invested in the Delicious system and the market is accustomed to the Delicious fruit type; but as scab pressure intensifies (partly linked to changing climate patterns in Kashmir) and input costs rise, Firdous and similar scab-resistant varieties represent the most important long-term direction for Indian apple breeding.

Advantages & considerations
Why farmers may choose it
- Genuine scab resistance (Vf gene) — drastically reduces the most expensive part of the spray programme.
- Good eating quality and acceptable fruit size and colour.
- The most important long-term breeding direction for Indian apple.
Things to consider
- Slower adoption — the market is accustomed to the Delicious fruit appearance.
- Scab resistance is race-specific (Vf gene) and could be overcome if new scab races emerge.
- Still needs management for powdery mildew and other diseases — scab resistance does not mean spray-free.
Suitable regions
Released by SKUAST-Kashmir (1996), the most important scab-resistant Indian apple variety, suited to the Kashmir valley where scab pressure is highest.
- Jammu and Kashmir
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip all sprays if I plant Firdous?
No — Firdous resists apple scab specifically (the Vf gene), but it still needs management for powdery mildew, premature leaf fall (Marssonina), insect pests and nutrient sprays. The scab-spray component is the most expensive part, so the saving is real, but it is not a spray-free variety.
