About this variety
Ambri is the only truly indigenous apple variety of Kashmir — a flat-shaped, aromatic fruit with a distinctive, complex flavour that Kashmiris prize and that is quite unlike the mild sweetness of Delicious. It predates the introduction of Red Delicious into the valley and was once the dominant commercial variety, but its lower colour appeal in Indian wholesale markets, longer time to bearing (typically 6–8 years even when grafted, on vigorous rootstock), and moderate rather than high yield potential have seen its commercial acreage shrink as Delicious sports expanded. However, Ambri is increasingly valued as a heritage and premium-niche variety — its unique flavour, longer natural storage life than Delicious (the firmer, denser flesh stores better), and cultural significance make it a strong candidate for local and export niche markets that value distinctiveness over uniformity.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ambri worth planting commercially today?
For the mainstream wholesale market, Delicious sports remain more profitable. But Ambri commands a genuine premium in Kashmir's local retail and the growing heritage-fruit niche, and its longer natural storage life is a practical advantage where cold-chain access is limited.
