About this variety

Gala is an internationally popular apple variety — the world's second most produced after Fuji — that is gaining traction in Indian orchards as a premium, early-maturing alternative to the Delicious group. It ripens in August, 4–6 weeks before the main Red Delicious harvest in September–October, which means it arrives in the market when competition is low and prices are high. The fruit is medium-sized, bi-coloured (orange-red stripes on a yellow background), with a sweet, mild, aromatic flavour and a firm, crisp texture that stores better than Delicious. Gala is especially well suited to modern high-density orchards on M9 rootstock, where its moderate vigour and early bearing (3–5 years) fit the intensive management model. It is not scab-resistant and needs the standard spray programme, but its market timing advantage makes it one of the most commercially interesting varieties for new plantings in both Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Advantages & considerations

Why farmers may choose it

  • Early maturity (August) — arrives in market when competition is low and prices are high.
  • Sweet, crisp, aromatic flesh with better storage life than Delicious.
  • Well suited to modern high-density M9-trellis orchards.

Things to consider

  • Not scab-resistant — needs the standard spray programme.
  • Market awareness in India is still developing compared to the dominant Delicious.
  • Requires good cold-chain to maintain its crisp texture post-harvest.

  • Himachal Pradesh

Frequently asked questions

Is Gala better than Red Delicious for new plantings?

For modern, high-density orchards targeting the early-season premium market, Gala is increasingly the better commercial choice. For the mainstream October wholesale market where buyers expect red Delicious, the Delicious sports still dominate. Many new orchards plant both.
