About this variety

Kerman is the pistachio industry's global standard female cultivar, the variety behind the overwhelming majority of pistachio grown commercially in the United States and widely planted across other producing regions, prized for its relatively large nut size and reliable kernel quality. It is a female-only cultivar — like every pistachio tree, an individual Kerman tree bears no fruit on its own regardless of care, since pistachio is dioecious and wind-pollinated rather than self-fertile or bee-pollinated. A Kerman planting is therefore never planted alone: it needs a compatible male pollinator, most classically Peters, positioned so wind can carry pollen to the female flowers during an overlapping spring bloom window, commonly at a ratio of roughly one male tree for every eight to ten Kerman trees. Internationally, Kerman requires a substantial winter chill — historically cited at 900 or more hours below 7.2°C in California for good, even budbreak and pollen viability in both Kerman and Peters — a demanding figure well above almond's, which is part of why the very few Indian trial plantings sit specifically in Ladakh's cold-desert districts of Kargil and Leh, where cold winters and long, hot, dry summers together resemble the continental climate of the world's established pistachio belts, rather than in the milder, more humid Kashmir valley. India has no domestically bred or ICAR-released pistachio cultivar, and no confirmed Indian yield, spacing or disease-resistance data exists for Kerman specifically — any planting decision made today rests on figures borrowed from Iranian or Californian orchards rather than local Indian evidence, and should be treated accordingly.
