Overview
Phytophthora root rot, caused by the water-mould Phytophthora cinnamomi, is considered the single most damaging disease of avocado anywhere the crop is grown, India included. It attacks the tree's fine feeder roots first, and because avocado cannot tolerate waterlogging at all, any pit, basin or orchard block that holds water even briefly gives the pathogen exactly the conditions it needs to spread.
The disease is slow and easy to miss early: a tree in decline shows small, pale, sparse leaves, dieback of twigs from the tip inward, and poor, undersized fruit, symptoms that look like simple nutrient stress until the roots are dug up and found blackened and stripped of the fine white feeder roots a healthy tree relies on. Cultural & organic control
- Never plant avocado in a low-lying, waterlogging-prone spot — choose a well-drained slope or raised bed over flat, heavy ground every time.
- Dig a wide, well-drained planting pit rather than a narrow one in heavy soil, and avoid over-irrigating young trees, since excess water is the single biggest risk factor.
- Mulch around (not against) the trunk to improve soil structure and moisture buffering without waterlogging the root zone.
- Buy only certified, disease-free nursery plants, and avoid moving soil, water or tools between an affected block and a healthy one.
