Overview
The shoot borer is the most damaging pest of the shoots of ginger and turmeric. The moth lays eggs on the pseudostem and leaves; the caterpillar bores into the pseudostem and feeds inside, cutting off the central shoot, which yellows, withers and dries into a "dead heart" while the outer leaves may still be green.
The bore hole is usually marked by frass (droppings) pushed out, and the same pest can bore down into the rhizome, damaging it directly and opening it to soft rot and other rhizome rots. Because the caterpillar feeds inside the shoot, control depends on catching young larvae, removing dead-heart shoots to take out the borer, and protecting the crop during the vulnerable shoot-growth period.
How to identify it
- A yellowing, withering central shoot ("dead heart") that dries while the outer leaves may stay green.
- A bore hole in the pseudostem with frass (droppings) pushed out around it.
- On splitting an affected pseudostem or rhizome, a caterpillar and a tunnel inside.
- Damage during the active shoot-growth period, mainly in the monsoon months.

Organic & cultural control
- Cut and destroy dead-heart shoots (with the caterpillar inside) as soon as they appear.
- Spray neem (NSKE 5%) on young larvae, use pheromone/light traps to monitor the moths, and conserve natural enemies.
- Use healthy, pest-free seed rhizomes, follow crop rotation, and keep the field clean of residue that harbours the pest.
- Earthing-up and good crop hygiene help protect the shoots and rhizomes.
Chemical control
- Target young larvae before they bore in, with a CIB&RC-registered insecticide for the crop, timed to the shoot-growth period.
- Because the borer is inside the shoot/rhizome, early timing and removing dead hearts matter more than late spraying.
- Rotate insecticide groups and observe the pre-harvest interval — the rhizome is the edible product.
