Overview

Several grain- and seed-eating birds — house sparrows, parakeets (rose-ringed), crows, doves, mynas, weaver birds and others — damage crops by feeding on sown seed and, above all, on ripening heads and grain. The worst-hit crops are sunflower (the exposed seed head is very attractive), sorghum, pearl millet, maize, and ripening cereals, though many crops are pecked at some stage.

Damage is concentrated at two points: just after sowing (birds pick up seed) and, most importantly, from the milk to the dough stage of the grain, when birds strip developing seed from the heads and cobs. It is typically worst on field edges and near tree lines, buildings and roosting sites the birds fly from, and on small or isolated fields. Because it is wildlife, management is about deterrence and reducing attractiveness — scaring, timing, and physical protection — rather than insecticides.

How to identify it

  • Ripening heads, sunflower discs and cobs with seed pecked out or stripped, and damaged, empty patches on the head.
  • Gaps in a newly-sown field where seed has been picked up, and flocks of birds settling on the crop, especially morning and evening.
  • Damage concentrated on field edges and near tree lines, buildings and roosting/perching sites.
  • Worse on small, isolated fields and on early- or late-maturing fields that stand out from the surrounding crop.

The damage it does

  • Loss of sown seed and gappy stands where birds feed just after sowing.
  • Heaviest, most visible loss at the milk-to-dough stage on exposed heads like sunflower.

When to act

  • Protect the crop from the milk stage through to harvest, when ripening grain is most attractive — and cover the just-sown period for seed loss.
  • Be most vigilant on field edges and near tree lines, buildings and roosts, and on small or isolated plots.
  • Start deterrence before birds establish a feeding habit on the field, and keep varying the methods.

Management (deterrence & cultural)

  • Scare birds actively at the vulnerable stage — reflective ribbons/tapes, scarecrows, noise-makers and bird-scaring, and move/change them often so birds do not get used to them.
  • Time and synchronise sowing with the surrounding area so no single field stands out as an early or late feeding target, and avoid very small isolated plots of an attractive crop.
  • On high-value or small areas, protect heads physically — netting, or bagging sunflower heads — where practical.
  • Reduce nearby roosting/perching opportunities and, where appropriate, encourage birds of prey; harvest promptly once mature to shorten the exposure.

A note on control

  • Birds are wildlife, not an insect pest — management is about deterrence and protection, not spraying an insecticide.
  • Many birds are protected and also beneficial (they eat insect pests), so the aim is to reduce feeding damage, not to harm the birds.
  • Combine several deterrents and keep changing them, since birds quickly learn to ignore a single unchanging method.

Frequently asked questions

Birds are stripping the seed from my sunflower heads. What can I do?

Sunflower’s exposed seed head is very attractive to birds, especially from the milk to dough stage. Protect it with active scaring (reflective tapes, scarecrows, noise) that you move and change often, and on smaller areas net or bag the heads. Synchronise sowing so your field does not ripen alone as an easy target, and harvest promptly once mature.

Why is bird damage worse near tree lines and on small fields?

Because birds fly out to feed from trees, buildings and roosting sites, so field edges and areas near those perches are hit hardest. Small, isolated fields — and fields that mature earlier or later than those around them — concentrate the birds’ attention. Synchronised sowing, larger blocks and reducing nearby roosts all help spread and reduce the damage.

Should I use a chemical for bird damage?

No — birds are wildlife, not an insect pest, and insecticides are neither appropriate nor effective against them. Manage bird damage with deterrence and protection: active, frequently-changed scaring, synchronised sowing, netting or bagging on small/high-value areas, and prompt harvest. Many birds are also protected and beneficial, so the goal is to reduce feeding, not to harm them.
