Overview
Chlorine, taken up as the chloride ion, is a micronutrient — but a genuine deficiency is the rarest of all the nutrient shortages in Indian farming. Chloride is delivered free in rain, in almost all irrigation water, in muriate of potash (which is potassium chloride) and even in the dust; most fields get far more than the tiny amount the crop needs.
When it does occur — on inland, high-rainfall, sandy soils far from any chloride source — it shows as wilting, mottled and chlorotic young leaves and reduced growth. Coconut is the crop where chloride response is best documented in India; there, chloride is genuinely beneficial and muriate of potash is preferred precisely because it supplies both potassium and chloride.
How to spot it
- Young leaves wilt (especially at midday), then become mottled and chlorotic, with a bronzed cast in some crops.
- Growth is reduced and, in some crops, roots become stubby with many short branches.
- It is genuinely uncommon — most "chloride problems" in India are the opposite, chloride excess/salinity, not deficiency.
- In coconut, low chloride shows as reduced vigour and yield rather than a dramatic leaf symptom.
Why it happens
- Inland, high-rainfall regions far from the sea, where rain carries little chloride and heavy leaching removes what there is.
- Sandy soils very low in organic matter, receiving no muriate of potash or chloride-bearing irrigation water.
- Use of only sulphate fertilisers (sulphate of potash) over a long period on such soils, so no chloride is ever added.
Confirm before you spend
- Before assuming chloride deficiency — which is very rare — rule out the far more common causes of wilting and mottling: water stress, root disease, and other micronutrient issues.
- It is realistic mainly on inland high-rainfall sandy soils and in coconut; on most Indian fields chloride is in surplus, not short.
How to correct it
- Simply using muriate of potash (potassium chloride) instead of sulphate of potash supplies all the chloride a crop needs, alongside its potassium — usually no separate chloride input is required.
- For coconut, muriate of potash is the standard potassium source precisely because the palm responds to the chloride it carries.
- Chloride is highly soluble and mobile, so a corrective application acts quickly once made.
- Because chloride toxicity (salinity) is the far more common risk, apply only where a genuine deficiency setting exists — do not add chloride routinely.
Prevent it coming back
- On the rare deficiency-prone soils, keep muriate of potash (not sulphate of potash) as the potassium source, which supplies chloride as a matter of course.
- Build organic matter, which holds some chloride against leaching on sandy soils.
- On most soils, no action is needed — chloride arrives free in rain and irrigation water.

Rule those out first; genuine chloride deficiency is realistic mainly on inland high-rainfall sandy soils and in coconut.
