Overview

The citrus leaf miner is a tiny moth whose maggot mines the tender, newly-flushing leaves of citrus. It tunnels just under the leaf surface, leaving a characteristic silvery, snaking (serpentine) mine, usually with a fine dark line of frass down the middle, and the mined leaf curls, twists and is distorted.

On mature, well-established trees the damage is largely cosmetic and natural enemies help keep it down, but on nursery plants and young trees, whose growth is almost all tender flush, heavy mining genuinely stunts the plant. Importantly, the mines it makes are entry wounds for the citrus canker bacterium, so leaf miner control is also part of managing canker. It therefore matters most on the new flush of nursery and young citrus.

How to identify it

  • Silvery, snaking (serpentine) mines just under the surface of the tender new leaves, often with a fine dark frass line down the tunnel.
  • Mined leaves that curl, twist and are distorted, especially on the new flush.
  • A tiny maggot at the end of the mine, and later the leaf edge rolled where it pupates.
  • Heaviest on nursery plants and young trees, which flush frequently.

The damage it does

  • Curled, distorted, mined new leaves with reduced function — genuinely stunting nursery and young trees.
  • Mines that serve as entry wounds for the citrus canker bacterium, worsening that disease.
  • Largely cosmetic damage on mature, established trees, where it is less important.
  • Repeated attacks on successive flushes on young plants that slow their establishment.

When to act

  • Focus on the new flush of nursery plants and young trees, where the miner does real harm — protect each flush as it emerges.
  • On mature trees, tolerate light mining and let natural enemies work, rather than spraying reflexively.
  • Where citrus canker is a concern, manage the leaf miner as part of canker control on young growth.

Organic & cultural control

  • Conserve the parasitic wasps that attack citrus leaf miner — they provide substantial control, especially on mature trees; avoid broad-spectrum sprays.
  • Spray neem on the emerging flush of nursery and young trees to deter egg-laying and check young mines.
  • Manage flushing so it is more uniform and easier to protect, and prune/remove badly-mined shoots on young plants.
  • Keep nursery plants vigorous so they establish despite some mining.

Chemical control

  • On nursery and young trees where mining is heavy, protect the new flush with a CIB&RC-registered insecticide for citrus leaf miner, timed to flush emergence.
  • Prefer selective products and correct timing over repeated broad-spectrum sprays, which kill the parasitoids.
  • Observe the pre-harvest interval on bearing trees; focus chemical use on young, non-bearing plants where it matters most.
