Overview

The coconut eriophyid mite is a microscopic mite that has become a widespread pest of coconut. The mites live packed in colonies in the narrow, sheltered space under the tender bracts (perianth) at the base of young, developing nuts, where they rasp and feed on the soft nut surface, protected from sprays and weather.

Their feeding first shows as a pale triangular patch under the perianth; as the nut grows this becomes brown, corky, warty and cracked scarring, and the nut may be distorted and undersized. Heavy infestation causes immature nuts ("buttons") to drop and reduces the size of the nut and the copra inside. Because the mite shelters under the bracts where sprays struggle to reach, management leans on tree nutrition and vigour, biological agents and root/crown treatments rather than simple cover spraying.

How to identify it

  • A pale triangular patch under the perianth (bracts) at the base of young nuts, where the mites feed.
  • As nuts grow, brown, corky, warty, cracked scarring spreading from under the bracts, with distorted, undersized nuts.
  • Heavy shedding of immature nuts ("buttons").
  • The mites themselves are microscopic and not visible to the naked eye — the scarring pattern is the diagnostic.
