Overview
Coconut root (wilt) disease is a chronic, debilitating disease of coconut associated with a phytoplasma, best known from parts of the south-west coast of India. It is slow and progressive rather than quickly fatal. The characteristic early sign is an abnormal flexing (bending) of the leaflets and a ribbon-like narrowing/curling, together with yellowing and, in some palms, marginal necrosis (browning) of the leaflets. Over time the crown thins, the palm loses vigour, and nut number and size fall.
The disease does not usually kill the palm outright, but it keeps it chronically weak and unproductive, and yield declines steadily over the years; affected palms are also more prone to other problems. It is a phytoplasma disease (with insect-vector involvement) and there is no cure once a palm is infected. Management is about keeping palms as healthy and productive as possible for as long as possible — good nutrition, water and soil management, growing tolerant/resistant palms and disease-free seedlings, and cutting out and removing advanced-diseased, unproductive palms.
How to identify it
