Overview
Stem bleeding and leaf rot are grouped together because they are usually seen on the same weak, stressed palms and their control overlaps, though the two symptoms come from slightly different fungi. Stem bleeding is caused mainly by Thielaviopsis paradoxa, which infects wounds and cracks on the trunk and makes a reddish-brown liquid ooze out and run down the bark. Leaf rot is caused by a mix of fungi that rot the leaflets of the youngest, still-unopened leaf (the spindle).
Both problems are strongly linked to palm stress — poor nutrition, water stress, injury to the trunk, or an existing weakening disease such as root (wilt) disease make a palm far more likely to develop stem bleeding and leaf rot. A well-nourished, vigorous palm growing in good conditions rarely develops these symptoms badly, so keeping palms healthy is as important as any direct treatment.
How to identify it
- Stem bleeding: reddish-brown liquid oozing from cracks on the trunk and running down the bark, often at or below a wound or old leaf-base scar.
- Leaf rot: rotting, discoloured leaflets on the youngest, still-unopened leaf (the spindle) at the crown.
- Both symptoms are far more common on palms that are already weak — poorly fed, drought-stressed, injured, or already affected by another disease.
- The two often appear together on the same palm, alongside a general decline in crown health and nut yield.
What causes it and when
- Stem bleeding is caused mainly by the fungus Thielaviopsis paradoxa, which enters the trunk through wounds, cracks or old injuries.
- Leaf rot is caused by a mix of fungi that attack the soft, unopened youngest leaf, especially when it is already weakened.
- Both are worst on palms under stress — from poor nutrition, water shortage, mechanical injury to the trunk, or an existing disease such as root (wilt) disease.
- Humid conditions and general palm neglect (poor manuring, no drainage management) let both problems establish and spread faster.
Cultural & organic control
- Keep palms well-nourished with a balanced, regular manuring programme — vigour is the biggest single defence against both symptoms.
- Avoid injuring the trunk during cultivation, harvesting or climbing, since wounds are the main entry point for stem bleeding.
- Ensure good drainage and irrigation scheduling so palms are not under constant water stress.
- Remove and destroy severely rotted leaf material from the crown where practical, to reduce the fungal load nearby.
Chemical control
- For stem bleeding, chisel out the bleeding, diseased bark to healthy tissue and paint the wound with a recommended fungicide paste.
- For leaf rot, cut out and treat visibly rotted leaf tissue in the crown with a recommended fungicide as advised.
- Chemical treatment works far better alongside improving the palm’s nutrition and water status than on its own — a chronically stressed palm tends to relapse.

Prevent it coming back
- Maintain a regular, balanced manuring and irrigation schedule to keep palms vigorous and less prone to both symptoms.

- Manage any underlying disease (such as root wilt) and general palm health, since stem bleeding and leaf rot are usually a sign of an already-stressed palm rather than a stand-alone problem.

Seeing stem bleeding on a palm is a reasonable prompt to also check it for signs of root wilt and other stress factors, rather than treating the bleeding as an isolated problem.
I treated the bleeding lesion but it came back a season later — why?
Treating the lesion itself (scraping and painting with fungicide) deals with that one infection, but if the palm is still weak — poorly fed, water-stressed, or carrying another disease — it remains an easy target for a fresh infection. Lasting control needs the lesion treatment combined with improving the palm’s nutrition, water management and general vigour, not the lesion treatment alone.
