Overview
Garlic bloat mite, also called eriophyid mite, is microscopic — far too small to see with the eye. It is diagnosed by the damage it causes: twisted, curled, streaked leaves in the field, and, in storage, sunken tan patches with a dry, spongy rot developing inside the cloves.
What makes this pest a serious, recurring problem is that it is carried inside the clove itself. Infested planting material spreads it straight into the next crop, and damage continues after harvest, in storage, on top of whatever leaf damage was already done in the field — so apparently clean-looking seed can still be the source of the problem.
