Guar bacterial blight, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. cyamopsidis, is documented as a major disease of guar in Rajasthan and across India's guar belt — the single biggest disease risk the crop faces, ahead of Alternaria leaf blight, anthracnose and powdery mildew. It shows first as small, water-soaked spots on the leaves that enlarge into angular, brown, necrotic lesions, often merging into larger blighted patches under favourable weather.
Beyond the leaves, the bacterium can canker the stem and spot the pods, cutting both plant vigour and marketable seed. It is seed-borne, so infected seed introduces the disease into a field and can also carry it forward season after season; once present, it spreads further through wind-driven rain and insect movement. Disease progression tracks weather closely — published field studies link its buildup directly to periods of warm, humid, rainy weather, so a wet kharif season sees noticeably worse blight than a drier one. As with any bacterial disease, there is no reliable chemical cure once a plant is infected, so management is built around clean seed, resistant lines where available, and field sanitation.

- Rotate away from guar for a season or two on land with a recent blight history, and destroy infected crop residue and volunteer plants rather than leaving them in the field.
- Avoid working the crop or letting equipment move through it while the foliage is wet, since this physically spreads the bacteria between plants.
Chemical control
- No spray cures an already-infected plant — bacterial blight does not respond to fungicides.
- A copper-based bactericide, applied preventively before or at the very earliest sign of disease, can help slow spread in a wet, high-risk season where recommended.

Prevent it coming back
- Clean, certified seed every season is the foundation — nothing else compensates for infected seed re-introducing the disease.
