Overview
Jute semilooper is a green caterpillar that moves with the same distinctive looping, arching gait as its better-known cousin, castor semilooper — but it is a different species, found specifically on jute, and the two do not attack the same crop.
The caterpillars feed on jute leaves, starting with small, irregular holes and, in a heavy attack, progressing to fully skeletonised leaves with only the veins left. It tends to build up as the season goes on, especially once the crop canopy closes and humidity rises, and repeated generations mean the risk can recur through the growing season rather than being a one-time event.
How to identify it
- Green caterpillars that arch and loop as they move, the same walking style as castor semilooper — but check the crop: this species is found on jute, a different species from the one on castor.
- Early damage shows as small, irregular holes scattered across leaves; a heavy attack skeletonises leaves down to the veins.
