The litchi fruit borer is a small caterpillar pest that attacks developing litchi fruit, boring in typically near the stalk end and feeding on the seed and surrounding pulp from inside. It is a distinct pest from the fruit flies that attack many other fruit crops on this site — a borer tunnels in and feeds internally rather than stinging the fruit surface to lay eggs, and it needs its own management approach rather than fruit-fly traps and baits.
It is one of litchi's most damaging pests: a bored fruit is unsellable in the fresh market, since the internal damage and any resulting rot are usually only discovered when the fruit is opened, by which point it has already been picked, packed or sold as sound fruit. How to identify it
- A fine entry hole, often near the stalk end of the developing fruit, sometimes with a little frass (caterpillar droppings) visible.
