Overview

Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV) is the disease that decides how well a papaya planting will do almost everywhere the crop is grown in India. It is spread by aphids, which pick up the virus while briefly feeding on an infected plant and carry it to healthy ones within seconds — so even a light aphid presence can spread the virus through a young block fast. There is no chemical cure once a plant is infected; management is entirely about keeping the virus out and slowing its spread, not curing it.

An infected plant shows mottled, yellow-green, distorted and sometimes narrow, thread-like leaves, and stops growing normally. Fruit from an infected plant is marked with dark green or brown rings and streaks on the skin, and yields far less than a healthy plant. Because the virus has no cure, the whole approach to papaya growing — a clean, isolated planting site, vigorous seedlings, quick removal of the first infected plants, and aphid management — is built around outgrowing and outrunning the virus rather than curing it.

How to identify it

  • Leaves show a mottled, patchy yellow-green pattern, become distorted or blistered, and can turn narrow and thread-like in a severe case.
  • The whole plant is visibly stunted and grows much slower than a healthy neighbour of the same age.
  • Fruit develops dark green to brown rings, streaks or spots on the skin — the symptom the disease is named for.
  • Infected plants set far less fruit, and the fruit that does form is smaller and lower quality.

What causes it and when

  • A virus, spread from plant to plant by aphids that pick it up while feeding on an infected plant, even for just a few seconds, and pass it on at the next plant they land on.
  • The virus is not carried in true seed of a healthy crop, but infected plants anywhere nearby — a neighbouring field, roadside cucurbits, or old infected papayas left standing — are a constant source aphids can pick it up from.
  • Aphid numbers and movement, not the papaya plant itself, are what drive how fast the virus spreads through a block.
  • Young plants are most vulnerable; a block infected early in its life loses far more productive years than one infected once it is already fruiting well.

Cultural & organic control

  • Choose a clean, isolated planting site, away from old or infected papaya plantings and from roadside/wild cucurbits that can also carry the virus.
  • Rogue out (remove and destroy) the first infected plants as soon as symptoms are seen, rather than leaving them as a source of virus for aphids to spread further.
  • Raise vigorous, well-nourished seedlings and get the crop growing fast — a fast-growing block outruns and out-yields the virus better than a weak, slow one.
  • Conserve natural predators of aphids (ladybird beetles, hoverflies) by avoiding unnecessary broad-spectrum spraying early in the crop’s life.

Chemical control

  • There is no chemical that cures the virus itself once a plant is infected — chemical control here means managing the aphid vector, not the virus.
  • A recommended insecticide against aphids can reduce their numbers, but because aphids can spread the virus in the seconds before an insecticide kills them, spraying alone will not fully stop spread — it is only one part of the plan.
  • Reflective mulch has shown some success in reducing aphid landing on young plants in trials, where it is practical to use.

Prevent it coming back

  • Always plant a fresh block on a clean, isolated site rather than replanting right next to an old, virus-affected planting.

  • Use fresh, certified hybrid seed from a reliable source and raise vigorous seedlings, since a strong, fast-growing crop tolerates and outruns the virus better than a weak one.

My papaya leaves are mottled and the fruit has dark rings — is there any spray that cures this?

No. That is papaya ring spot virus, and there is no chemical cure once a plant is infected — it will stay infected for its whole life, growing poorly and producing marked, lower-quality fruit.
