Black pepper slow decline (slow wilt)
A gradual, season-by-season wasting of pepper vines from nematode-damaged roots and secondary fungi — creeps rather than kills fast, and is best managed before dieback is obvious.

Overview
Slow decline, also called slow wilt, is a gradual decline of black pepper vines over one or more seasons — quite different from the sudden collapse of foot rot. It is caused mainly by the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) and the burrowing nematode (Radopholus similis) feeding on and damaging the roots, with Fusarium and other soil fungi entering the wounds. Root mealybug is also associated with the complex.
The vine shows progressive yellowing, leaf and spike shedding from the lower vine upward, dieback of hanging shoots, a reduced and knotted or lesioned root system when dug, and a slow fall in yield. Because it creeps — a season of mild yellowing and a light crop is easy to blame on weather — the root system is often badly damaged by the time dieback is obvious. Neem cake, bio-agents and a tolerant variety work far better applied early. Prevention starts with clean, nematode-free planting material.
How to identify it
- Progressive yellowing and leaf and spike shedding, starting from the lower part of the vine and moving up.
- Dieback of the hanging shoots and a steady fall in yield over one or more seasons.
- When a root is dug up: a reduced root system with knots (galls) or dark lesions, and few healthy feeder roots.
- Unlike foot rot, the vine wastes away over time rather than wilting and dying within weeks.
What causes it and when
- Mainly the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) and the burrowing nematode (Radopholus similis), which damage the roots.
- Fusarium and other soil fungi enter the nematode wounds and add to the decline; root mealybug is also linked to the complex.
- Carried into a clean garden in infested planting material or on soil moved from an affected garden.
Cultural & organic control
- Plant only nematode-free rooted cuttings from a clean mother garden — this is the single most important step.
- In an affected garden, choose a tolerant variety such as Pournami, which tolerates the root-knot nematode.
- Apply neem cake and bio-agents (Pochonia / Purpureocillium, Trichoderma) to the planting pit and annually to the root zone, with organic manure and mulch.
- Do not move soil or planting material from a slow-decline garden to a clean one.
When the vine is already declining
- On mildly affected vines, apply a recommended nematicide or bio-agent with organic manure to the root zone, improve nutrition and mulch, and see if the vine recovers over a season.
- Remove severely declined vines — they are a reservoir of nematodes for the rest of the garden.
- An advanced case with a badly damaged root system is difficult to reverse; replanting with a tolerant variety on a treated pit is often the better option.
