Overview
The pod fly is one of the most damaging and most easily-missed pests of pigeonpea (arhar). The small fly lays eggs into young pods, and the maggot develops completely inside, feeding on the developing seed. There is almost no external sign of attack, so a field can look clean while a large share of the grain is being destroyed inside the pods.
The damage only shows when you open the pods — the seed is shrivelled, discoloured, tunnelled or hollow, and you may see the maggot or pupa inside and a tiny "window" left for the adult to emerge. Because the pest is hidden, control depends on protecting the pods during formation and development, timed to when the flies are active, rather than reacting to visible damage.
How to identify it
- Pods that look sound outside but, when opened, hold shrivelled, discoloured, tunnelled or hollowed seed.
- A small maggot or brown pupa inside the pod, and a tiny circular "window" or exit hole where the adult leaves.
- No obvious external feeding — this is the key trap, so open a sample of pods to detect it.
- Damage concentrated at the seed, distinct from pod borers that leave large external bore holes.
The damage it does
- Shrivelled, tunnelled or hollow seed inside otherwise healthy-looking pods — direct grain loss.
- Loss that goes unnoticed until threshing, because the pods show little external sign.
- Reduced grain weight and quality, and higher rejection of the produce.
- Can affect a large share of the crop while the field still looks clean.
When to act
- Because there is no external warning, open a sample of pods regularly from pod formation onwards to check the seed inside.
- Protect the crop through pod formation and filling, when the flies lay into the pods — this is the window that matters.
- Combine pod-fly management with pod-borer (Helicoverpa/Maruca) management, since they overlap on pigeonpea at the same stage.
Organic & cultural control
- Grow recommended tolerant varieties and sow at the recommended time so podding does not coincide with peak fly activity.
- Spray neem (NSKE 5%) during flowering to pod formation to deter egg-laying into the young pods.
- Remove and destroy old, damaged and volunteer pigeonpea, and follow crop rotation to reduce carry-over.
- Conserve natural enemies and manage the whole pod-pest complex together rather than the pod fly alone.
Chemical control
- Time control to pod formation and early filling, when adults are laying — a spray then, before the maggot is sealed inside the seed, is the only way to reach the pest.
- CIB&RC-registered insecticides used against the pigeonpea pod complex (as registered for the crop) will also check pod fly when timed to this stage.
- Once the maggot is developing inside the seed, no spray reaches it, so timing is everything; rotate groups and observe the pre-harvest interval.
