A pod can look normal from outside while a pod bug has already sucked the soft seed inside into a shrivelled, discoloured mess.

Overview

Pod bug covers a group of shield- or spine-shouldered sap-sucking bugs, green to brown, that cluster on developing pods of arhar and urad. They pierce the pod wall to feed on the soft, developing seed inside, rather than chewing the pod open the way a borer does.

Damage builds up alongside pod formation and peaks through the podding stage. Because feeding happens from outside the pod, a pod can look nearly normal until it is opened, by which point the grain inside is already shrivelled, discoloured and poorly filled — a direct hit on both yield and seed quality.

How to identify it

  • Green to brown, shield- or spine-shouldered bugs clustering on maturing pods, easiest to spot in the cool early morning when they move slowly.
  • Feeding punctures on the pod surface, with the seed inside shrivelled, discoloured or poorly filled when the pod is opened.
  • Damage builds up alongside pod formation and is worst right through the podding stage.

The damage it does

  • Sap-sucking on the developing seed causes shrivelled, discoloured, poorly filled grain.
  • Both yield and seed quality drop — affected grain is often unfit for seed use or premium sale.
  • Heavy infestation timed with podding can affect a large share of pods before it is noticed.

When to act

  • Start checking pods for bugs and feeding marks as soon as podding begins, since that is when both the pest and the damage appear.
  • Look in the cool early morning, when the bugs are sluggish and easier to see and hand-collect.
  • Time any spray to the podding window, ideally combined with the pod-borer spray many fields already need at that stage.

Organic & cultural control

  • Hand-collect bugs from small plots in the cool morning hours, when they move slowly and are easy to catch.
  • Conserve natural predators earlier in the season by avoiding broad-spectrum sprays that are not really needed yet.
  • A clean field with fewer weeds and volunteer host plants gives the bugs fewer places to build up before the crop pods.

Chemical control

  • A labelled contact insecticide at the podding stage controls the bugs once numbers build up beyond a few per plant.
  • Combining this spray with the pod-borer spray already timed to podding saves an extra round of spraying.
  • Confirm the current recommended product and dose for your crop and area with your local KVK.

Frequently asked questions

My arhar/urad pods look fine outside but the grain inside is shrivelled. Why?

This is the classic sign of pod bug. The bugs pierce the pod wall and suck the soft, developing seed inside, so the pod can look normal from outside while the grain is shrunken and discoloured.

When are these bugs easiest to catch by hand?

In the cool early morning, when they are sluggish and cluster visibly on the pods. Once the day warms up they become active and harder to catch.

Should I spray separately for pod bug and pod borer?

Not usually — both problems peak around the podding stage, so a single, well-timed insecticide application at that stage, combined with your pod-borer spray where needed, generally covers both.
